Griz grab 10 event wins in Spokane
4/4/2025 10:00:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Montana track and field team picked up 10 event wins in Spokane on Friday against plenty of Big Sky and D-1 competition at the Whitworth Peace Meet. The Grizzlies had a solid day all around in the second week of the outdoor season.
Â
The men and women each had five event wins for the total of 10, and the wins came across the board. The men had two on the track and three in the field while the women had two in the field and three on the track in a balanced team effort.
Â
"I thought we had a solid team-wide performance today for both the men and the women in all event areas," head coach Doug Fraley said. "It felt like we made a lot of progress across the board, so that's a good second step in the outdoor season."
Â
Ashley Carroll won the women's javelin competition with a throw of 147-1. Carroll finished  4th last year at the Big Sky Championship with a throw of 136-0, and the sophomore from Shepherd improved upon that career best mark on Friday afternoon.
Â
Her throw is the best in the Big Sky Conference this season. It's also just outside the top 40 in the NCAA West Region, putting her in a potential position to qualify for the NCAA West Regional in College Station, Texas at the end of May.
Â
"I thought that from an individual perspective what Ashley did in the women's javelin was outstanding," Fraley said. "It was a big PR for her and a really high level throw."
Â
The Grizzlies had wins on both sides in the pole vault. It was a dominating performance from one of the strongest event groups for the Grizzlies as the men and women combined for 10 of the top 12 overall finishes.
Â
Carson Weeden improved upon his career best set last week with a mark of 16-7.5 to win the men's competition. Kevin Swindler finished second with a clearance of 16-3.5 and Carson Hegele and Corbin Luce went 3-4 in the event.
Â
Samantha Serex won the women's pole vault for the second time in as many meets with a mark of 12-7.25. It's her best this outdoor season. She edged out Shealyne McGee on misses as McGee also cleared a season best bar at 12-7.25.
Â
The vertical jumps group picked up another win in the men's high jump where Patrick Kremer set a new PR by clearing 6-9.
Â
"The vertical jump crew was really good today with Patrick winning the high jump and us winning both the men's and women's pole vault," Fraley said. "It was a very solid performance from those groups today."
Â
Donaven Humphries provided the final field event win for the Grizzlies in the men's hammer throw. His mark of 182-4 topped the field and kept him in the top five in the Big Sky this season.
Â
The Grizzlies had wins in the men's 400m and 800m thanks to season-best performances from Ty Ferguson and Truman Thompson. Ferguson won the 400m in a time of 48.31 and Thompson won the 800m with a 1:52.51.
Â
The women's middle distance and distance groups also had a solid day with Iris McKean leading the charge with a double-PR in the 1,500m (4:42.13) and the 5,000m (17:47.96).
Â
Overall, the groups on the track made solid progress for just the second competition of the outdoor season.
Â
"I felt like we made a lot of headway with some really good middle distance marks, really good 200-meter marks, so it's good to see our field event people having a good showing and then getting some good marks on the track as well," Fraley said.
Â
Freshman Sophia Clark had an impressive run in the women's 400m, dominating the event in just her second outdoor collegiate meet. Clark improved by nearly a full second from her first performance, winning the race in a time of 55.56.
Â
Clark's time is the 3rd fastest in the Big Sky Conference this year and beat the nearest competitor on Saturday by well over a full second.
Â
Freshman Braden Ankeny led the 200m group with a third place finish in a time of 21.31. Fellow freshman Malaki Simpson was close behind him in 5th with a time of 21.44.
Â
Sophomore Tara Ohlwiler won the women's 200m with a personal record of 24.13 seconds. Ohlwiler also was the runner-up in the women's 100m to continue her momentum from a record-setting indoor season.
Â
Jayel Dovichak, another sophomore, won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.28 seconds. The young runners on the Grizzlies carried the day with some outstanding times at every distance. Â
Â
"Some of our young runners today in both the sprints, hurdles, and middle distance areas really performed well and had some fast times for the second meet of the season," Fraley said. "It's good to have a lot of event wins and a lot of top two, top three finishes with some decent competition at this meet. All in all, a pretty good meet."
Â
Montana's multi-athletes will compete next week, but the bulk of the roster will have a weekend off before heading to California for several meets beginning on April 17. Fraley likes where his team is at as they prepare for some high level competition in The Golden State.
Â
"We made progress in a lot of areas which is what you want to see from meet to meet. Now we will have a weekend off and then will take our top group of athletes out to California for a couple of meets. It will be great to get out in some good weather with high level competition and move the season forward."
