The 2024 season is Alison Mitchell’s third year as an assistant coach with the Montana softball program.
She was hired in the summer of 2021 after previously serving as the head coach at NCAA Division II Central Washington.
A Washington native, Mitchell spent 13 years coaching Washington Ladyhawks teams while also coaching at Eastside Catholic, Skyline and Redmond high schools in the Seattle area from 2004-19.
She was hired by Central Washington in December 2019 and coached the Wildcats through two pandemic-impacted seasons before getting hired at Montana.
Mitchell, who prepped at Eastside Catholic, graduated from Washington State in 2004 with a degree in criminal justice.
She coached at Eastside Catholic for five years, the last two as head coach, then moved on to Skyline High as the head coach.
Mitchell spent seven seasons, from 2013 to 2019, at Redmond High, four as an assistant coach, the last three as the head coach.
The school advanced to six consecutive state tournaments between 2014 and 2019 and would send eight players on to play collegiately.
In her first year as RHS’s head coach, in 2017, Mitchell’s team won conference and district titles, the Class 3A state championship and was named the Washington State Academic Team Champion.
With the Ladyhawks, Mitchell led her 16U team to a ninth-place finish at the initial Premier Girls Fastpitch nationals in 2010.
She coached more than five dozen players who would go on to play Division I softball.
Mitchell, who also worked as a special education teacher during her time coaching high school softball, guided her first Central Washington team to a 13-9 record in 2020 before the season was shut down.
Playing another abbreviated schedule in 2021, the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
