The 2022 season will be Sarah O’Brien’s third year as an assistant coach with the Montana softball program. She was hired in the summer of 2019 after coaching six seasons at Texas Lutheran, one at Houston.
She oversees the team’s outfield defense, teaches the High Level Throwing program and assists with the team’s hitting.
In her first year with the Grizzlies, she helped the team open 12-12 before the 2020 season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. It was the best 24-game start in program history.
Montana knocked off No. 23 Arkansas 5-0 on the Razorbacks’ home field for its first win over a ranked opponent in program history and later added a 6-0 shutout of Michigan State.
In her second season, in 2021, Montana finished third at the Big Sky Conference tournament, with the Grizzlies winning three postseason games.
Raised in Kennewick, Wash., O’Brien played two years at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash., before moving to San Antonio, Texas, and playing two more years at then Division II Incarnate Word.
The outfielder batted .359 as a junior in 2011 and was voted second-team All-Lone Star Conference.
She made the league’s all-tournament team as a senior in 2012 when the Cardinals won the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.
O’Brien coached on Wade Wilson’s staff at Texas Lutheran for six seasons, from 2013-18. The Bulldogs went 223-39 and advanced to five NCAA Division III national tournaments.
She spent the 2019 season as a volunteer assistant at Houston. The Cougars went 39-19 and advanced to the NCAA tournament, where they won a pair of games.
