The 2027 season is Makena Strong’s first year as an assistant coach with the Montana softball program.
She was a graduate assistant coach for the Grizzlies in 2026 when Montana went from eight wins to 22 and came within a game of winning the program’s first-ever Big Sky Conference regular-season title.
Montana tied for second in the Big Sky with a 9-6 league record in 2026 after going 2-28 in league the previous two seasons and won three games at the Big Sky tournament.
Strong was a three-year player for the Grizzlies from 2023-25, appearing in 97 games and making 63 starts. She totaled 26 hits, scored 35 runs and drove in eight.
Strong graduated in the spring of 2025 with a degree in communications studies.
She was a three-time Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete, a two-time Academic All-Big Sky Conference selection and in 2025 was named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators.
Strong was presented with the UM President’s Award in both 2023-24 and 2024-25 for having the Montana Department of Athletics’ highest female student-athlete GPA.
