Montana football bragging rights are staying in Missoula. Again.
The University of Montana Grizzlies extended their dominance over Montana State, defeating the Bobcats 38-27 Saturday in Bozeman. The victory is the 16th straight win over MSU, as well as their 20th conference win in a row and the 11th consecutive Big Sky road win.
Senior running back Yohance Humphery had 101 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the game. Humphery, who already holds school records for career, single-season, and single-game rushing yards, now needs 5 points to break the UM career scoring record, currently held by former kicker Kirk Duce with 280.
The Bobcats were the first on the board when they took the opening drive 80 yards topped by a Ryan Johnson 3-yard touchdown run. The Grizzlies answered right back on their first possession, going 69 yards on four plays, topped with a 26-yard touchdown strike from John Edwards to Etu Molden. UM then tried an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the Cats got the ball due to a Griz touch before the ball traveled the required 10 yards. The Cats started their drive in Montana territory and scored on a Johnson 6-yard TD run.
The two teams traded punts before Chris Snyder nailed a 34-yard field goal to make the score 14-10 early in the 2nd quarter to finish a 44-yard drive. The Cats went 3-and-out on their next possession and the Griz drove to the MSU 19-yard line. The Bobcats appeared to have the Montana offense stopped, but T.J. Oelkers ran for a touchdown on a fake field goal play to put the Griz up 17-14. MSU went three-and-out for the third straight time, but the Cat defense forced the Griz to punt. The Cats drove the field just before halftime, ending 1st half scoring with a 39-yard Nate Cook field goal with 27 seconds remaining, tying the game at 17.
The Griz started the second half on offense, but couldn't sustain the drive and had to punt. Mark Spencer's punt went 77 yards, pinning Montana State deep in their own territory. Dan Orizotti recovered for the Griz at the MSU 13 when Johnson fumbled. Humphery scored his first touchdown at the end of the brief drive on a 1-yard run. Later in the 3rd quarter, Humphery scored his second TD on another 1-yard run.
The Cats narrowed the Grizzly lead with a 3-yard pass from Tyler Thomas to Aaron Ware to cap a 8-play 80-yard touchdown drive. After an ineffective Griz possession, the Grizzly defense held MSU to a 35-yard Cook field goal after the Bobcats had been as close as the Griz 15-yard line, making the score 31-27. On the next UM possession, Edwards scored on a 1-yard scramble the complete a 10-play, 56-yard drive to extend the lead.
The teams again traded punts before the Cats turned the ball over on downs with 4:15 remaining. The Griz drained the clock to 51 seconds before punting, and on the final MSU possession Dave DeCoite picked off a Thomas pass with 15 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the the Griz.
