Football Players of the Week - Oct. 14

The Big Sky Conference has announced its football players of the week for games played Oct. 12. The Offensive Player of the Week is Portland State running back Ryan Fuqua, Montana safety Trey Young is the Defensive Player of the Week while Eastern Washington returner Eric Kimble and Sacramento State placekicker Bret LeVier split Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Fuqua rushed for 264 yards and two touchdowns in Portland State's 34-31 Big Sky victory over Eastern Washington. Fuqua, a sophomore from Ontario, Calif., carried the ball 41 times. Fuqua's first scoring run came from one-yard out on the first series of the game as he gained all 53 yards in the drive. Fuqua's second touchdown run was a 77-yarder in the fourth quarter that gave the Vikings a 34-24 lead. The effort was Fuqua's second 200-yard game this season and his sixth in his last 12 starts. With 264 yards in the game Fuqua moved into third-place on the PSU career rushing list with 2,445 yards.
Young led Montana's defensive effort in a 39-7 road win over Weber State. Young, a senior from San Diego, Calif., had six solo tackles, including one for a loss, in helping to hold the Wildcats to just seven points. Young, one of 16 players nationally on the "Buchanan Battle" list for the 2002 Buck Buchanan Award, also recorded an interception, a sack and a pass deflection. Young is a leader on the Grizzly defense which ranks third in the country in rushing defense (57.3 ypg) and is tied for fourth in scoring defense (11.3 ppg).
Kimble returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown in Eastern Washington's 34-31 road loss at Portland State. Kimble's punt return cut the Viking lead to just three points with 7:16 remaining in the game, but the Eagles could get no closer. The 80-yard punt return was the fifth-longest is school history. Kimble, a freshman from Tacoma, Wash., is averaging 13.5 yards per punt return this season to rank 18th in the nation.
LeVier kicked a career-long 50-yard field goal with 12:42 remaining in Sacramento State's 24-21 road win at Northern Arizona. LeVier, a freshman from Whittier, Calif., had a previous career-long of 41 yards. LeVier also made all three extra-point attempts in the game, extending his streak to 11 in a row, helping the Hornets to their first Big Sky win of the year.
