Griz tennis finishes successful week at ITA Regionals

The University of Montana men's tennis team ended their Fall season with strong play at the ITA Regional's in Las Vegas on Saturday Oct. 25.
Senior Ryan O'Neill finished with a singles record of 3-2 playing four days deep into the five day tournament. O'Neill ended singles play for teammate junior Gus Treyz with a third round consolation win 6-0, 6-0. O'Neill's tournament ended with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to UNLV's Aviram Salomon.
Junior Jan Steenekamp won only one of his three matches in Las Vegas. Following a Round of 64 loss to Peter Bjork of Colorado, Steenekamp filtered into the third consolation round where he was upended by Northern Arizona's Thibault Schram 6-3, 6-4.
Junior Stan Nevolovich also exited singles competition in the third round of consolation play with a three set loss to Alonso Medina of BYU 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Nevolovich finished the tournament 2-2 in singles play.
The Steenekamp/Nevolovich doubles duo won two consolation matches on Friday. An 8-5 win over Denver University's Jason Tan and Brian West advanced them into the third round qualifier. UM's top doubles team registered another win over Tyler Lyon and Danilo Zivanovic ov New Mexico State 8-3. Steenekamp/Nevolovich declined to play their third round consolation match vs. The Air Force Academy's Trevor Johnson and Justin Mancinelli, choosing instead to get back to Missoula on Saturday.
O'Neill/Treyz lost their only consolation doubles match to Montana State's Tejeshwata Chigateri and Federico Ueltschi 8-3.
UM's men's tennis team heads into the off-season where a selected group of players will work indoors at the Missoula Athletic Club. The Griz will host the UM Spring Invitational on March 19-21 in their next tournament.
