Quarterbacks Jeff Disney and Justin Hartman completed 10-of-13 passes for 77 yards in a run-dominated scrimmage held by The University of Montana Grizzlies in Washington Grizzly Stadium Saturday morning.
Ten different players rushed in the scrimmage, with freshman Loren Utterback (Fort Benton) leading the way with five carries for 30 yards, including the only score of the day, which came on a 1-yard run. UM rushers gained 63 yards on 26 carries.
Disney, a redshirt junior from Glendora, Calif., was 3-of-6 for 41 yards, but his first pass of the day was picked off by redshirt freshman safety Tyler Thomas (Dillon).
Hartman, a freshman from Great Falls and C.M. Russell High School, was 7-of-7 for 36 yards. Junior Craig Ochs, a transfer from the University of Colorado, missed the scrimmage due to an ankle injury.
"I was pleased with how sharp we looked, our hitting was crisp, we played with good discipline, and came off the ball well," said Griz head coach Bobby Hauck. "I also thought our kicking game was sharp."
Senior kicker Chris Snyder's (Spokane, Wash.) kick-offs were just short of the goal-line, while freshman punter Tyson Johnson (Stevensville) averaged 41.0 yards on four punts, with a long of 44.
Levander Segars (Colorado Springs, Colo.) caught five passes for 27 yards, while fellow junior Jefferson Heidelberger (Nevada City, Calif.) had two receptions for 45 yards.
Four different players registered sacks: junior linebacker Nick Vella (Castro Valley, Calif.), freshman end Mike Murphy (Great Falls), senior end Chris Connors (Butte), and junior tackle Jonny Varona (Medical Lake, Wash.).
Montana's final fall camp scrimmage is next Thursday, August 21 at a time TBA. The Griz open the 2003 season at Maine on Saturday, August 30 at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain time).
