Griz open season with win

The Montana Grizzlies were too much for the Maine Black Bears in the first ever "Battle of the Bears" Saturday night. The Grizzlies' scores came in all fashions with defensive and special team, as well as offensive touchdowns.
The offensive fireworks began for Grizzly football when junior kick return specialist Levander Segars busted a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, immediately following the first points of the game coming on a Maine field goal.
Maine was able to retake the lead only one more time, midway through the first quarter when redshirt freshman quarterback Ron Whitcomb hit sophomore wide receiver Kevin McMahan with a touchdown pass, making the score 10-7.
The offense was led by junior quarterback Jeff Disney who registered two touchdowns on the evening. In his first collegiate game, Disney had a seven yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw, giving the Grizzlies a 13-7 second quarter lead.
Senior strong safety Dave DeCoite's early second half fumble recovery and scamper into the endzone put the Griz up 20-10, providing momentum that the Maine Black Bears were unable to overcome.
Disney added a 25-yard second half touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Jonathon Talmage pushed the lead to 30-13, sealing a Griz victory.
The Montana Grizzly football team plays their Washington-Grizzly Stadium home opener next Saturday versus North Dakota State, kickoff at 1:05 p.m.
