Montana downs UC Irvine 1-0

Behind a raucous home crowd at South Campus Stadium in Missoula, the Montana Grizzlies defeated the University of California-Irvine Anteaters 1-0, as junior Jamie Rizzuto scored her second goal of the season in the 64th minute of the game.
After freshman Lindsay Winans threw in from the sidelines to Tara Schwager, the junior forward dribbled down the left sideline towards UC Irvine's goal. With two anteaters draped on her, Schwager fed the ball to Rizzuto out in front of the goal and Rizzuto sent it to over the head of Irvine goalkeeper Marissa Welliver.
It was Rizzuto's second goal of the season and it gave the Griz their first win of the young season, moving Montana to 1-3-1 on the year. UC Irvine dropped to 3-2-1.
After the game, Montana head coach Betsy Duerksen was smiling from ear to ear. "I miss winning, I was miserable all week," Duerksen said. "Jamie (Rizzuto) did a lot for us today, she's a goal scorer."
Throughout the match, Montana was able to match UC Irvine attack for attack, as for the first time this season the Grizzlies out shot an opponent, out-shooting the Anteaters 11-8 on the afternoon.
Tara Schwager led the Griz offensive attack with three shots and Nikki Bolstad added two. Winans missed a scoring opportunity minutes before Rizzuto's goal. Winans fired a shot from 10 feet out on the left side of the goal, but drilled the side of the net.
Rizzuto's goal though would be all that the Montana defense would need.
For the first time this season, the Grizzlies registered a shutout on defense. Anteater forward Hayley McNallan, who had three goals and eight points coming into Friday's match, was held pointless. She was limited to three shots by the Griz defense.
"It was our first shut out and we didn't make Sarah perform out of her mind," Duerksen said. "They played the ball well, we had more of the ball than what we've had."
Sarah Braseth picked up her first win of the season in goal for Montana, as she made four saves in the shutout.
