The University of Montana Grizzlies fell 3-0 to the Cal Poly Mustangs in the final game of the 2003 Montana Diadora Cup, which was held at South Campus Stadium in Missoula.
A season high 314 fans watched as Montana kept pace with Cal Poly, and if not for missed scoring opportunities, could have pulled out the win.
Montana dropped to 1-4-1 on the season while Cal Poly remained undefeated, improving to 6-0-0.
Early in the first half, Tara Schwager broke free down the left sideline towards Cal Poly's goal. Schwager had teammate Jamie Rizzuto on her right, but opted to take the shot herself and barely missed, as it went ride right. That shot came about ten minutes after the Grizzlies fired a shot over the Mustangs goal from point-blank range.
The Mustangs capitalized on the Grizzlies missed opportunities minutes later. Becky Clark took a ricocheted ball out in front of the Grizzly goal area and drifted a shot from about 20 feet out that went over the head of UM goalkeeper Sarah Braseth, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute of play.
Cal Poly scored again 10 minutes into the second half, as Erica Claussen, off an assist from Sarah Squires, collected her first goal of the season, moving the Cal Poly lead to 2-0. In the 84th minute of the game, Montana was called for a hand-ball in their own goal-area, giving Cal Poly a penalty kick. Megan Gurney fired the ball into the top-right side of the net for the final goal of the afternoon.
Montana is back in action this Friday, (Sept. 19) playing on the road against BYU at 7 p.m. The Grizzlies wrap up the road trip with a 1 p.m. tilt against Utah on Sunday, (Sept. 21).
