BC Lions win 26-20 over Winnipeg

Jason Clermont got up from the table in the B.C. Lions'
locker room after getting a few stitches above his right eye, but he was feeling no pain.
Actually, he was in good spirits, thanks to his 13-yard touchdown catch that gave the Lions a 26-20 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday.
"It came at a good time because we needed to score," Clermont said of his team's first offensive touchdown with just under four minutes left in the contest.
"We were in position to score and it just so happened that my number was called."
The Lions (8-5) snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory. Winnipeg dropped to 9-5, second in the West Division behind Edmonton (10-4).
With B.C. ahead 19-13, Lions receiver Frank Cutolo hauled in a 28-yard pass from Dave Dickenson to move to Winnipeg's 13-yard line. Clermont made his grab on the next play, stepping around Bomber safety Maurice Kelly and running into the end zone.
Winnipeg started mounting a comeback with slotback Milt Stegall's 100th
career touchdown, a one-yard catch to make it 26-20 with 1:52 to go in front of 27,605 fans at Canad Inns Stadium.
Dickenson was then intercepted by linebacker Brian Clark and Winnipeg took over at its own 42-yard line. The Bombers got down to B.C.'s 21-yard line, but quarterback Khari Jones failed to connect with Stegall and Robert Gordon, then was sacked on third down.
"This is a sign of a good football club, coming into a hostile place and
coming out with a win," said B.C. head coach Wally Buono.
Lions kicker Curtis Head connected on four field goals, while Troy Westwood hit two for Winnipeg.
Playing in a strong wind, Dickenson completed 29 of 53 pass attempts for 427 yards. Jones was 17-of-35 for 285 yards with one interception.
"We won, but offensively I think we had a good chance to put some more
touchdowns up earlier in the game," said Dickenson.
Clermont had seven catches for 76 yards, Chris Brazzell had seven for 157 yards and Cutolo caught nine passes for 141 yards. Gordon had four catches for 118 yards for Winnipeg.
Bombers running back Charles Roberts, who carried 14 times for 95 yards, was involved in the game's first pair of touchdowns -- in a good and bad way.
Lions linebacker Carl Kidd stepped in front of Roberts and intercepted a Jones pass early in the first quarter, running 66 yards for a touchdown and the 7-0 lead.
But 1:19 into the second quarter -- aided by B.C. penalties for pass interference and objectionable conduct -- Roberts took a handoff from the one-yard line and ran around defenders to even the score 7-7.
B.C. had a 13-10 lead at halftime.
Winnipeg wide receiver Markus Howell went in at cornerback for two plays after Kelly and cornerback Ricky Bell collided helmet to helmet making a tackle late in the first quarter.
Kelly returned to action, but Bell ended up leaving the game with a suspected concussion. Winnipeg may have lost offensive tackle Dave Mudge for the season with a suspected torn ACL in his right knee.
When asked where his offence's spark was prior to the late surge, Winnipeg head coach Dave Ritchie had no answer.
"Who knows, who knows, who knows," Ritchie said.
Notes: Kicker Troy Westwood was playing in his 220th consecutive game, tying Dave Ridgway for the ninth-longest streak in CFL history. Retired Bomber punter Bob Cameron holds the record with 353 games.
