Montana advances on 2-1 win over EWU

The Montana soccer team (8-7-2) eliminated Eastern Washington (7-9-2) from the 2004 Big Sky Championship Tournament with a 2-1 victory Friday morning at PGE Park.
The Grizzlies' cause was aided by the mental blunder of Eastern Washington's senior defender Abbie Socha who fouled, Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year, Lindsay Winans, a sophomore from Tigard, Ore., in the box and then kicked her while she lay on the turf.
Socha was quickly sent off with a red card, and Montana's senior forward Tara Schwager booted the resulting penalty kick into the lower left corner of the goal, beating EWU's Tiera Como.
Eastern Washington got on the board early when junior Kim McMullen received a pass from Jennie Summers near midfield and broke away from the Griz defense to score in the fourth minute of the match.
Montana evened the score in the 22nd minute when Schwager put the ball into the upper right corner from 20 yards out off of a pass from Winans.
Montana outshot the Eagles 17-9 in the match but the teams combined to put only five shots on goal.
Montana moves onto the championship game against the winner of Portland State (8-7-3) and Weber State (6-9-2) scheduled for 12:30 pm Friday.
