Griz head South for three duals

MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Montana men's tennis team (2-1, 0-1 Big Sky) continues their Spring tennis season this week heading South for three dual matches in the State of New Mexico. The Grizzlies will compete Thursday at 2 p.m. against New Mexico State (4-5, 2-0 Sun Belt) at the NMSU Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. On Friday the Griz travel to the Lobo Tennis Club in Albuquerque for a 6 p.m. dual versus the University of New Mexico (4-4, 0-0 Mountain West). Montana finishes their southern-swing with a dual against NAIA opponent College of Santa Fe (2-0) at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Last Outing: The University of Montana men's tennis team won two-of-three dual matches in their opening weekend of the 2004 season at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman, Mont. The Grizzlies recorded both wins in a double-header on February 21, a 4-3 morning victory over Lewis & Clark State College and a 4-0 sweep of MSU Billings in the evening. Senior Nick Tyree's singles conquests clinched both dual wins, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over Phil McKeague of Lewis & Clark State and 6-1, 6-3 win over Kellen Malone of MSU-Billings. On February 20 the Grizzlies fell in their season-opening dual to Montana State, 0-7.
About New Mexico State: The Aggies, currently 75th in the bi-monthly ITA rankings, are coming off a tough weekend in Lubbock, Texas where they dropped two duals to Texas Tech and Texas-Corpus Christi. New Mexico State has competed against two other Big Sky Conference schools this Spring, recording a 4-2 victory over Sacramento State and a 2-5 loss in the season-opener with Northern Arizona.
About New Mexico: The 66th ranked Lobos are coming off a tour of the Ivy League where they dropped three-straight dual matches (2-5, Yale; 1-6, Harvard; 1-6, Brown). New Mexico has been led by senior Divan Coetzee who maintains a 7-3 singles record at the No. 1 position and 7-1 mark as part of the Lobos No. 2 doubles tandem with teammate Hiroud Akhavan. Coetzee, currently the 22nd ranked singles player, boasts a career record of 84-28 and is 12 wins shy of breaking UNM's all-time mark.
About Santa Fe: The 7th-ranked team in NAIA is 2-0 overall, registering a 5-1 win over Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and a 6-3 conquest over Oklahoma Christian. Santa Fe is the top-ranked team in NAIA Region VI.
