Shawn Destafney's goal off a corner kick at the 65:12 mark of the second half was all that the University of Montana needed Friday night, as the Grizzlies beat the UM Alumni team 1-0 at South Campus Stadium to open up their spring season.
Kelly Fullerton took the corner kick from the right side of the field and sent the ball flying toward the left side of the net. Destafney then headed the ball past former Grizzly goalkeeper and current assistant coach Natalie Hiller for the game's only score.
It was the first game for new head coach Neil Sedgwick, who was hired in late January. Sedgwick was the associate head coach at the University of Southern California before coming up to Montana.
The game was controlled by Montana, as they out-shot the Alumni team 12-3 and took five corner kicks compared to one for the Alumni.
Among the former Grizzlies who played was former head coach Betsy Duerksen, 2001 Big Sky Conference defensive player of the year McKenzie Zajonc and Karen Hardy, the Grizzlies' second all-time leading scorer.
Montana continues its spring season with another scrimmage on Sunday against the Montana Olympic Development Program. The match starts at 2:00 p.m. at South Campus Stadium.
