The University of Montana women's tennis team is picked to finish fourth and the men's team to finish fifth in the 2005 Big Sky Conference preseason tennis poll that was announced by the league office Tuesday. The poll was voted on by the league's coaches who could not vote for their own teams.
"We'll try and prove them wrong and finish a little higher," Griz tennis coach Kris Nord said. "It's a preseason poll that is basically meaningless until we get into March."
The Sacramento State women, who have won three straight league championships, received six first-place votes to be a unanimous choice to win the championship. Northern Arizona was picked second while Montana State was third.
The Montana women received 19 points which tied them for fourth with Weber State. Idaho State and Eastern Washington rounded out the fifth and sixth spots.
Predicted to win on the men's side is Montana State, a team looking for a second straight league championship. Sacramento State, which won three straight Big Sky titles from 2001-03, earned one first-place vote to rank second. Idaho State and Northern Arizona are at No. 3 and No. 4 in the poll.
The Montana men received 16 points which has them alone in fifth place. Weber State and Eastern Washington are picked to finish fifth and sixth.
Big Sky member Portland State will not play tennis this season as the University was granted a two-year waiver for the program in the spring of 2003 by the Big Sky Presidents Council. The 2004 Big Sky Tennis Championships will be held April 28-30 in Sedona, Ariz., and will be hosted by Northern Arizona University.
The Montana women, 1-2 on the season, return to action on February 18-19 with road duals against Gonzaga and Eastern Washington. The men's squad opens the spring season on February 19-20 in Bozeman with duals against Lewis-Clark State, Montana State and MSU-Billings.
