The University of Montana men's tennis team (2-3, 1-0 Big Sky) travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., this week for road duals against Northern Colorado (0-3), Air Force (8-3) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (4-4).
The Grizzlies face the Bears at 6 p.m. (MST) on Friday, March 4, in their only match of the day. Montana plays a double-header on Saturday, March 5, with a 9 a.m. dual against the Falcons before a 6 p.m. match against the Phoenix. All contests are scheduled to be played at the Air Force Academy's indoor tennis facility.
Northern Colorado scouting report: The Bears have dropped all three of their matches this spring with the most recent a 5-2 loss at Air Force. UNC also lost matches to Big Sky opponents Idaho State and Montana State, falling 4-1 to the Bengals and 7-0 to the Bobcats. The Bears are led by junior Jeff Hall and sophomore Casey Ross who have rotated at the No. 1 singles position this spring.
Air Force scouting report: The Falcons have lost their last three matches after opening the season with eight consecutive wins. Air Force boasts wins over No. 73 UC Irvine and No. 55 Nebraska as well as Big Sky front-runner Montana State. Junior Shannon Buck, AFA's top singles and doubles player, is ranked No. 35 in the nation in singles play by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Buck, a two-time first team All-Mountain West selection, teams with senior Tyler McClung to rank 20th nationally in doubles play. Air Force won 4-3 over Montana last year in Colorado Springs.
Wisconsin-Green Bay scouting report: The Phoenix, 4-4 on the year, split a pair of duals last weekend sweeping UW-Whitewater 7-0 before falling 5-2 to Northern Illinois. UWGB is led by seniors Jarett Cascino and Tyler Dorn who play at Nos. 1 and 2 in the singles lineup.
Quoting head coach Kris Nord: "We'll be playing altitude tennis this week since all three matches are in Colorado Springs at 7,200 feet. It will be a bit of a challenge, similar to last weekend at Eastern Washington, in that it will be a really quick game on their indoor surface. Conditioning will surely be a factor this weekend. Air Force is very tough, and Northern Colorado and Wisconsin-Green Bay will be quality opponents. We'll be ready to play all three schools with a general goal of improving with each match."
Last weekend: Montana split a pair of matches last weekend in Cheney, Wash., losing 4-3 to Gonzaga on Saturday before a 4-3 conference win over Eastern Washington on Sunday.
Freshman Colin Mascall and sophomore Stuart Wing each went 2-0 in singles play. Mascall captured straight-set victories over GU's Dru Ernst and EWU's Brian Garfield at the No. 1 position. Wing, who won at No. 4 singles, also managed a 2-0 doubles mark at the No. 2 slot with teammate junior Varun Giri.
