Montana drops home-opener to Idaho

The University of Montana men's tennis team won the doubles point but dropped four of six singles contests in a 4-3 loss to Idaho Friday at the Missoula Athletic Club's indoor tennis facility. The Grizzlies drop to 4-5 on the season. Idaho improves to 2-5.
Montana's top singles player freshman Colin Mascall notched the day's first singles win with a straight-set victory at the No. 1. Mascall won 6-3, 6-0 over Idaho's Michael Suttner to improve his season dual match record to 6-3. UM sophomore Stuart Wing improved to 7-2 in dual competition after recording a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Robert Chalkey at No. 3 singles.
The Grizzlies opened the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the point for the fourth time this season. It was the first time Montana lost the match after winning the doubles competition.
UM's doubles tandem of Mascall and Wing won 8-6 over Suttner and Nugent at the No. 1. Junior Varun Giri and senior Gus Treyz won at the No. 2 position with a 9-8 victory over Idaho's Seth Banks and John Hieb.
Montana (4-5) plays the second half of its Friday double-header with an evening dual against Nevada (6-7).
