HELENA - Helena's Darah Newell shot a 69 - the lowest score of the day - to take the lead at the Montana Women's Amateur golf tournament at Green Meadow Country Club on Wednesday.
Darah made an eagle on the 18th that put her at the top of the leader board with a two-day total of 145.
"I went out there, kept it in play and consistent," Darah said.
Her sister, Devon, had a 70 for the day and was in second place with 147.
Jasi Acharya, a four-time state champion from Columbus and now a member of the University of Montana team, finished with a 4 over in the second round. She is tied for third with 149.
Rachel Warren, the leader after the first round, finished with a 75. Her two-day total of 149 puts her four shots off the lead.
"Play was a lot different Tuesday," said Warren, an All-Frontier Conference golfer from Rocky Mountain College in Billings. "Mainly because of the (calm wind Wednesday) and the course played different because of that. My shots to the holes were better and I did not have as long of putts to make."
Warren's first putt on the 18th missed two feet to the left, but she was to par the hole. The hole had moved from the left side of the green on Tuesday to straight center for the second round.
The flag placement may have changed for round two, but Devon said the holes were equally fair overall.
"A few of the holes are tough and a few you can go all out on," Devon said. "They kept it fair and equaled out the holes."
Warren said having different pin placements made for a few tough par-3 holes throughout the course.
"There were a couple of par 3 that had a hard pin and I had some difficult putts," Warren said.
Devon started the round on the back nine, where she had 5 under. Devon said she was doing well until hole No. 2.
"I hit the ball in the bunker and had to putt three times," Devon said.
Devon took a double on the hole and ended with 2 over on the front.
"You always have one or two (doubles)," Devon said. "I was coming off hot on the back nine and it just happened."
Going into Thursday's championship round, Warren is concentrating on taking one shot at a time.
"I want to play my own game," Warren said. "Hopefully I can come up with a good score."
Play resumes today at 7:15 a.m. The two leaders start from hole No. 1 at 1:50 p.m., the last flight of the tournament.
"My sister and I decided at the beginning of the summer that we wanted one of us to win (the tournament)," Darah said. "My goal is just for one of us to finish first."
In the women's senior amateur division, Mickey Moret from Bozeman shot a 79 and is tied for the lead with Fay Ferraro, also of Bozeman. Helena's Marilyn Muller had an 86 and dropped to third, one stroke off the pace, after leading the division on the first day.
