Griz soccer opens with successful scrimmage at Carroll

The University of Montana soccer team scored three goals to defeat Carroll in a season-opening non-scored scrimmage in Helena on Saturday afternoon.
The Grizzlies got two goals from forward Britta Bourne, a freshman from Kapolei, Hawaii, and one from forward Shawn Destafney, a junior from Alameda, Calif.
Bourne is one of 12 incoming freshmen, a group that makes up a significant part of second-year coach Neil Sedgwick's 25-woman roster.
Destafney was seeing her first competition since 2003 after missing the entire 2004 season with a knee injury.
Also returning after missing nearly the entire 2004 season was senior goalkeeper Sarah Braseth, a two-time second team All-Big Sky Conference selection from Kalispell, Mont. Braseth, who enters 2005 with 12 career shutouts, was injured just minutes into the Grizzlies' first match a year ago but has returned to health and should be one of the top keepers in the Big Sky Conference this season.
Every Grizzly soccer player saw minutes in the match.
"I think progress was made (today)," Sedgwick said after the match. "It was a good start for us. We need to continue to take positive steps forward like this and build throughout the season."
Montana opens its regular season next weekend with two road matches. On Friday the Grizzlies will play at New Mexico at 7 p.m. UM will face Colorado College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
