In a close and exciting match that went down to the final hole Mary Hasselberg of Staples captured the 81st annual Birchmont women's division title Saturday.
Hasselberg defeated Amanda Miller of Wahpeton 2-up for her first Birchmont crown.
The title was third for the Hasselberg family. Mary's Dad Glen has captured the men's and executive division titles.
It was a scrappy match,' Mary Hasselberg said. 'I shot a 74 (medal play) but it wasn't a pretty 74. Whenever I got in trouble I was able to make a shot to get out of it.'
The match was tight from the beginning. The finalists halved the first four holes. Miller then took what would be her only lead of the match with a par on number 5.
'I chunked my chip and ended up with bogey,' said Hasselberg. 'But I was able to get it right back with a par on 6.'
Hasselberg went 1-up on the seventh hole when she drilled a 12 foot birdie putt. But once again Miller came back to even things up with a par on 8.
It looked like Hasselberg would really take control after winning 10 with a par and making a 15 footer for birdie on 11. But Miller swung the momentum back and cut the lead to 1-up by winning with a bogey. Hasselberg drove the ball into the trees left and had to take an unplayable lie which led to the double bogey.
The players then halved the next four holes with par.
But Hasselberg probably saved the match on 17. With Miller looking at a par putt from 10 feet, Hasselberg was forced to execute a tricky flop shot from near the cart path to the right of the green.
She hit the shot to 12 feet and made the putt for par. Miller made her putt as well to keep the match alive.
Disaster struck Miller on the final hole. She mis-hit her drive and was forced to lay up short of the green with her second shot.
Meanwhile Hasselberg seized the moment and smoked her drive long to the middle of the fairway. She then put her approach shot on the green and made the birdie putt for the win.
'Like I said it wasn't the prettiest 74 ever, but I made it work,' she said. 'I was able to make the tough shots when I needed to. I also putted pretty well.
'I was a fun week.'
Hasselberg said she will now head back to Missoula, Mont. for her final year at the University of Montana. She's looking forward to playing at a University of Minnesota tournament in September.
'It will be my first college tournament in Minnesota,' she said. 'It'll be nice to play in a place where my Mom and Dad can come and watch without having to drive hundreds of miles.'
