Junior Lindsay Winans' goal in the 99th minute lifted The University of Montana soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Utah State Sunday afternoon at South Campus Stadium in MIssoula. Winans, who had a game-high six shots with four on goal, headed in a cross from freshman Sara Campbell for the game winner.
"It was a great individual effort by Sara Campbell to play a great ball into Lindsay who put it away to win the game," Griz coach Neil Sedgwick said. "It was a great goal to finish a hard-fought match with."
The win was Grizzlies' first of 2005 and improves their overall record to 1-4-1. Utah State drops to 0-4-2 on the year.
Montana dominated both in shots and corner kicks in the finale of the 2005 Montana Nike Cup. The Griz held an 18-11 shot advantage and also had nine corners to Utah State's three. The Aggies had seven saves and 19 fouls. Montana had four saves and 18 fouls.
UM was led offensively by Winans, whose 17 career goals ranks alone in eighth place all-time at Montana. Sophomore midfielder Mahlleace Tomsin scored the Grizzlies' first goal on her only shot of the match. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Braseth had four saves while playing all 99 available minutes.
The Aggies were led offensively by freshman Candice Clark who tied for a team-high with three shots and scored USU's only goal of the contest. Charity Weston and Rachelle Dixon had three shots apiece to match Clark. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelli Allred had a match-high seven saves playing the duration of the match.
Montana took a 1-0 lead after the free-kick goal by Tomsin in the 26th minute. Tomsin's 19-yard shot deflected off a Utah State defender and beat a helpless Allred. The free kick was set up by a hustle play by Winans who was tackled just outside the 18-yard box after a penetrative run through the midfield.
Utah State evened the match at 1-1 in the 79th minute on a goal by Clark. Poor passing between Braseth and the Griz back line led to a Clark steal which resulted in a one-versus-one equalizing goal.
Winans scored her second goal of the season with the game winner in the extra time.
"We came out with some good energy and played the game with a commitment to competing," Sedgwick said. "They put some pressure on us, especially late, but we stayed focused and got the win."
Montana returns to action next weekend with road matches at Gonzaga and Idaho. The Griz face the Zags Friday at 4 p.m. (MTN) before a Sunday 2 p.m. meeting against the Vandals.
