Montana golfers begin 2005-06 season at Minnesota Invitational

MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Montana golf team starts its 2005 fall season at the Minnesota Invitational September 17-18 at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn. This weekend's tournament is the first for the Grizzlies who participate in four fall competitions over the next two months.
Schools joining Montana in the 12-team Minnesota Invitational field include: Bradley, Creighton, Eastern Washington, Gustavus Adolphus, Minnesota, Missouri-Kansas City, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Southwest Missouri State.
Familiar faces return for UM
The Griz have seven players returning from last year's team that finished second at the Big Sky Golf Championship in Goodyear, Ariz. UM's three-round team score of 918 eclipsed the school record of 922, and its final-round team score of 299 matched the school mark, both set on the same golf course earlier in 2005 at the Bobcat Desert Classic. The Griz, who were picked fifth in the preseason coaches poll last year, placed second to earn their best finish at the conference championship since the 2002 season.
Senior Jasi Acharya and junior Krista Swanson return as Montana's one-two punch at the top of the lineup. Acharya, a two-time All-Big Sky Conference selection, has led the Griz in stroke average over the past two seasons. Swanson, a second team all-league pick in 2005, finished second individually at last year's conference tourney with a three-round 224.
Also returning for UM are veterans Madison Schroeder, Anna Maria Jaramillo and Brittany Williamson. Schroeder and Williamson qualified for a combined four competitions last season. Jaramillo sat out the year as a redshirt.
Redshirting this season will be senior Jill Walker who is one of Montana's key performers. Walker, along with Acharya and Swanson, was one of three Grizzlies that competed in all nine tournaments in the 2004-05 season.

Montana returns to action September 26-27 at the Nebraska Chip-n-Club Invitational, a 54-hole tournament that will take place at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
