Montana finished second after firing a final round 313 at the Minnesota Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. The Grizzlies shot a first-round 307, and followed that up with a second-round 309 to grab the lead after the 36-hole first day. Montana was led by junior Krista Swanson who finished third with a three-round 228 (79-75-74). Senior Jasi Acharya ended the 54-hole tournament in fourth place with a 230 (70-81-79).
Quoting coach Joanne Steele
"We finished second out of 14 teams last weekend which is strong showing for us at our season-opening tournament. We had the lead after 36 holes and I think that put a little more pressure on us as we entered the final round of play. We struggled a little in the final round, mostly the last four or five holes where we just didn't finish strong. I think it was a great learning experience for our team to be in a position where we lead going into the final round. We need to improve our ability to close-out tournaments," Steele said about the Griz last weekend.
"It should be another strong field at the Nebraska Invitational. I think we'll be able to hold our own and really compete for a win this weekend. I believe it could be a little more difficult than last weekend but it will be a very good challenge for the team early in the season," Steele said about this weekend's Nebraska Invitational.
Next up for Montana
After the Nebraska Invitational the Grizzlies take a weekend off before returning to action Oct. 9-11 at the Boise State Invitational. The 54-hole tourament will be held at Banbury Golf Club in Boise, Idaho.
Familiar faces return for UM this year
The Griz have seven players returning from last year's team that finished second at the Big Sky Golf Championship in Goodyear, Ariz. UM's three-round team score of 918 eclipsed the school record of 922, and its final-round team score of 299 matched the school mark, both set on the same golf course earlier in 2005 at the Bobcat Desert Classic. The Griz, who were picked fifth in the preseason coaches poll last year, placed second to earn their best finish at the conference championship since the 2002 season.
