MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Montana soccer team returns to the road this week with matches at Eastern Washington and Washington State.
The Grizzlies (2-5-1) open Big Sky Conference play Friday at 5 p.m. (MTN) against the Eagles (1-6-2) at EWU Sports and Recreation Center in Cheney, Wash. Montana faces the Cougars (5-3-1) in a non-league matchup at 2 p.m. Sunday at WSU?s Lower Soccer Field in Pullman, Wash.
Montana did not play matches last weekend. UM split a pair of matches on its last road trip Sept. 16-18, losing 3-1 to Gonzaga before a 2-0 win over Idaho.
History kind to the Grizzlies
Montana soccer has enjoyed a scheduled weekend off four times in its 12 years of existence. The Grizzlies have used that time to their advantage boasting a 3-0-1 record in matches following the break in the season.
Last year the Grizzlies had a weekend off before hosting their regular-season Big Sky Conference opener with Eastern Washington. Montana, in its first game back after a 3-1 home win over New Mexico, battled the Eagles to a scoreless draw.
The Grizzlies were victorious in the other three times there was a weekend off in the schedule. In 1997 Montana was coming off a 2-1 home loss to Cal Poly before rebounding with a 4-0 home win over Washington State.
In 1996 the Grizzlies were coming off a 3-0 home win over Portland State before they recorded a 4-1 home win over Arizona State. In 1994, Montana?s inaugural season of soccer, the Grizzlies were coming off a 1-0 loss at Colorado College before tallying a 1-0 road win over Gonzaga.

"It provided us with a solid week of training. During the season teams are often preparing on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for a Friday competition. During those weeks we really have to watch our volume of training. When you have an off week you can train heavy to boost fitness levels and become sharp for the next week of preparation," Head coach Neil Sedgwick said of UM?s training during the weekend off.
"We have a couple of different positions where we have been short a player or two because of injuries that occurred in the first few weeks. This extra time has really given us a chance to get them healed up and ready to compete again. We should be adding a few players to our lineup this weekend. These additions excite us because they will bring some experience and some ability that we?ve been missing," Sedgwick on the health of the Griz as they enter Big Sky Conference play.
"We know that this weekend is going to be a tough one for us. Last year we played them twice and the difference between the two teams in two matches was one goal. Eastern Washington is a hard-working, energetic team that is coming off a great result with BYU so there spirits are going to be high. They?ll attempt to pressure us and really look to counter-attack on our play," Sedgwick on Friday?s contest with the Eagles.
"Washington State is a Pac-10 school that we had success with last year, but they have certainly grown as a team since we last saw them. We?re prepared to face a solid team with a strong group of athletes who will be looking to continue their winning ways," Sedgwick on what to expect from the Cougars on Sunday.
Scouting Eastern Washington
The Eagles, who are 1-6-2 this season, return seven starters and 12 letterwinners from a team that finished 2004 as regular-season Big Sky co-champions with a 7-9-2 record.
EWU opened the season by losing six of its first seven contests. Since the tough start the Eagles have managed a pair of draws. EWU battled to a 1-1 tie at Boise State and to a scoreless draw at No. 15 BYU.
George Hageage is in his sixth year as mentor of the Eastern Washington women?s soccer program. Hageage has a 28-61-7 career coaching record, all with the Eagles.
Sophomore Cyeeta Mott, a second team all-conference selection in 2004, leads the Eagles with two goals through nine matches. Leading the defense is senior goalkeeper Tiera Como who has already been named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week twice in 2005. Como has 69 saves and two shutouts to go along with a 1.38 GAA.
Montana is 6-1-1 all-time against EWU. The schools met twice last year, battling to a scoreless draw in the regular season before UM?s 2-1 win in the conference tournament semifinal.
Scouting Washington State
The Cougars, who are 5-2-0 this season, return 10 starters and 18 letterwinners from a team that went 8-7-4 in 2004.
Washington State opened the season with three consecutive road wins, including a 3-2 win at No. 20 Tennessee. Since a pair of midseason losses, the Cougs have tallied 1-0 wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Long Island.
Matt Potter is in his third season as head coach at Washington State. Potter has a career coaching mark of 19-20-6 all with the Cougars.
WSU freshman Megan Hyte is off to a hot start this season with a team-best four goals. Senior Alix Rustrum has added a goal and an assist. Rustrum led the Cougars last season with a team-high nine goals which earned her second team All-Pac 10 accolades.

The Grizzlies lead the all-time series 6-4-1 over the Cougars. Last year in the most recent meeting between two schools Montana recorded a 2-1 overtime victory in Missoula.
Griz 2, Idaho 0 (Sept. 18)
Junior Lindsay Winans netted a pair of goals to lead The University of Montana soccer team to a 2-0 win over Idaho Sunday afternoon at Guy Wicks Field in Moscow. The win was the Grizzlies? first road conquest of 2005 and improved their season record to 2-5-1. The Vandals dropped to 2-5-0 on the year.
Montana recorded 15 shots and had seven corner kicks in the match. UM?s six total points and two assists were both season highs. Idaho took 12 shots and totaled only two corners. Both teams committed 16 fouls in the match.
"Overall it was solid team performance," Griz coach Neil Sedgwick said. "We?d worked hard all season on trying to get positive goal scoring opportunities and we got some today."
To go along with her third and fourth scores of the season, Winans had season highs with 10 shots and four shots on goal. Montana?s two-time all-conference selection now has 19 career goals which ties her for seventh place all-time with former Griz standout Sheralyn Fowler (1994-96).
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Braseth led the Grizzlies defensively with three saves in 90 minutes of work. Braseth tallied her second shutout of the season and now ranks second all-time at UM with 13 career shutouts.
Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Smith grabbed four saves to lead the Idaho defensive effort. The Vandals had eight different players combine to take 12 shots, but only three of those shots were on goal. IU?s reigning Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Sonja Baumgartner was held without a shot in 58 minutes of action.
The Grizzlies took the early lead in the 16th minute on a breakaway goal by Winans. UM senior Stephanie Davis played a ball behind the Vandal defense which found Winans who beat Smith to the lower right corner.
Montana held the one-goal advantage through halftime and early into the second half before Winans added the go-ahead in the 68th minute. The Tigard, Ore., product, received a cross from the left side of the field from freshman Britta Bourne and redirected it into the net for her fourth goal of 2005.
"The second goal allowed us a little bit of breathing room," Sedgwick said. "We were able to get valuable playing time for some of our younger players with the two-goal lead."
Boise State 1, Griz 0 (Sept. 16)
The University of Montana soccer team lost 3-1 to Gonzaga Friday night at Martin Field in Spokane, Wash. Three different players scored goals for the Bulldogs who improved to 3-2-1 with the win. The Grizzlies drop their season mark to 1-5-1.
Gonzaga dominated the match on the offensive end out-shooting Montana, 20-5. The Bulldogs also had five corners to the Grizzlies three. Both teams played aggressively in the non-conference contest, Gonzaga committed 15 fouls while Montana was whistled for 10.
The Grizzlies were led offensively by junior Lindsay Winans who had a team-high two shots in the match. Junior Kelly Fullerton and freshmen Sara Aspinwall and Danielle McQuinn all added one shot for Montana. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Braseth matched a season-high with five saves in 90 minutes of action.
Junior Beth Drollinger, sophomore Heather Horn and freshman Lacey Castleberry each scored goals for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Nanda McCormick and freshman Kelcey Goddard both recorded assists for Gonzaga. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen had one save while playing the duration of the match.
"They came out with a lot of energy and put us under pressure right from the beginning," Griz coach Neil Sedgwick said.
Gonzaga struck first in the 19th minute on an unassisted goal by Drollinger. The Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead in the 41st minute on the Castleberry goal which resulted from a Goddard pass off a corner kick.
The lead was cut to 2-1 in the 43rd minute on an own goal by Gonzaga, a poor clearance by a Bulldog defender that ended up in the back of the net. That one-goal lead lasted until the 58th minute when McCormick found Horn for the match?s final score to put GU up 3-1.
