Senior Lindsay Winans could not have written it any better. The Tigard, Ore., native scored her second career hat trick for the University of Montana, while tying Karen Hardy for the career record for shots at UM, as the Grizzlies defeated Northern Arizona, 4-0, in the conference opener for both schools, Friday, Oct. 6. The hat-trick was the 15th in school history. Her first hat trick came in a 3-1 over New Mexico in 2004.
"NAU is a strong team with good individuals. We put the ball in the net today and you hope it happens at the right time," said coach Neil Sedgwick.
Winans scored her first goal, and fifth of the season, off a corner kick from senior Kristina Lamberty in the 57th minute.
Senior Kelly Fullerton extended the Grizzly lead to 2-0 after she scored directly off a free kick just outside the left side of the penalty box. The goal was Fullerton??s first goal of the season and second of her career.
Winans notched her second goal of the day unassisted with her shot into the upper left corner from 18 yards out in the 74th minute.
Winans, who took a game-high nine shots, completed the hat trick as she beat the keeper one on one off a pass from freshman Kristyn Shapka. The goal was the 28th of her career, moving her into fourth all-time in Griz history.
"Winans is a natural goal scorer. When she is firing on all cylinders, the team is usually firing on all cylinders," said Sedgwick.
Freshman Grace Harris extended her shutout streak to 370 minutes over four games. The Missoula, Mont., native made one save in the UM win. Harris' one save is the fewest for a single-game in UM school history. The last time Montana posted four consecutive shutouts was during the 2000 season.
Junior Elizabeth Winkelblec allowed four goals and made five saves for the Lumberjacks.
Sophomore Cee Cee Odorfer led NAU with six shots.
Montana enjoyed a 22-12 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. It was the eighth time in school history that Montana has not given up a corner kick in a single game.
Montana improves to 7-5-0, 1-0-0 in the Big Sky and will face conference newcomer Northern Colorado, Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
Northern Arizona, who is 0-7-0 all-time against Montana in Missoula, falls to 5-7-0, 0-1-0 in the Big Sky and will continue conference play at Eastern Washington, Sunday, Oct. 8 at noon.
