Griz season ends in shootout at Big Sky Tournament

The University of Montana women's soccer team saw its season come to an end as they lost to Sacramento State, 5-4, in a shootout, Friday, Nov. 3, in the semifinals of the 2006 Big Sky Championship in Pocatello, Idaho. The Grizzlies, the No. 2 seed, end the year 10-8-2 while Sacramento State, the No. 3 seed, will advance to the championship match with a record of 10-7-3. The shootout was the first in Montana history as well as the first in Big Sky tournament history.
"After a disappointing season in 2005, we came together for 2006. We wanted to be playing in the Big Sky tournament at the end of the season. We played hard and it came down to penalties," said coach Sedgwick.
Montana senior MacKenzie Murphy opened the scoring with her goal in the ninth. Senior Lindsay Winans dribbled by one defender in the penalty box before sending a low cross to Murphy who scored inside the near post. The goal was her fourth of the season.
The Hornets answered with the game-tying goal in the 58th minute. Sarah Howard scored her third goal of the season as she chipped the ball over the Montana goalkeeper from 20 yards out. She was assisted on the goal by Beverly Goebel.
The two teams, who combined for 40 fouls in the match, played two scoreless overtime periods before deciding the game on penalty kicks.
Senior Kelly Fullerton, a first-team All-Big Sky selection this season, was the first shooter for the Grizzlies.
Mandy Trojan stopped Fullerton's shot on goal.
Beverly Goebel followed up with her goal to tie the shootout at 1-1.
Mahlleace Tomsin, Murphy and Sara Aspinwall all made their penalty shots.
Sacramento State followed up with goals by Katie Rorabaugh, Kara Taylor and Katie McCoy to continue its 4-3 advantage.
Winans, the 2006 Big Sky Conference Offensive MVP, converted the fifth and final shot to tie the shootout at 4-4.
Kelly Novak then converted the final penalty shot for the Hornet win.
Mandy Trojan made two saves while allowing one goal in the Sacramento State win.
Freshman Grace Harris, the 2006 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year, made four saves and allowed one goal for the Grizzlies.
Sacramento State out-shot Montana, 13-8, but the Grizzlies held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sacramento State will face the winner of the Idaho State/Weber State match in the championship match, Saunday, Nov. 5, at noon.
