The University of Montana women's soccer team was ranked the 16th most improved Division 1 team in the nation by Sommis Sports. The Grizzlies finished the 2006 season with a 10-8-2 record after finishing 3-13-1 in 2005. UM improved its record from the previous season by seven wins and finished with a 1.38 net rating.
A Somis Sports team rating is typically the combination of the score rating and the win rating. The score rating is based on the final score (margin of victory) and the strength of the team's opponent. The score rating does not give extra weight to whether or not the team won or lost the game. The win rating is based on the team's won-lost record relative to the strength of its schedule and relative to its score rating.
"This ranking shows in the results the progress the team has made," said coach Neil Sedgwick. "Obviously you would like to keep things steady. Going into the fourth year you want to keep a steady record."
The 2007 season will mark the fourth season under Sedgwick. Sedgwick has guided the team to two Big Sky tournaments in the previous three seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2004.
"Often times with coaching changes, the team may struggle to adapt to the changes of the new program."
Fellow Big Sky opponent Idaho State finished 11th with an improvement of six wins and a net rating of 1.50.
The University of Denver led the nation with a net rating of 2.88 and an improvement of 10 wins. The Pioneers advanced to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
