Track and field teams open with successful meet at Sac State

The University of Montana outdoor track and field teams had seven Big Sky Conference-qualifying performances and one NCAA Midwest Regional-qualifying mark to highlight the Grizzlies' season-opening performance at the blustery Sacramento State Invitational Saturday.
Junior Alicia Mills, an NCAA Midwest Regional qualifier in the javelin in 2005 and the Montana school record holder in the event, qualified again Saturday by placing fourth in the javelin with a distance of 143-6. California's Emilee Strot won the event with a throw of 152-10.
Putting up BSC-qualifying marks were senior Jas Gill in the high jump (first, 6-9.75), junior James Stanton in the shot (sixth, 51-9) and discus (10th, 160-11), sophomores Loni Perkins in the 400 meters (second, 55.44) and Rachel Hendricks in the high jump (tied for third, 5-4.25) and freshman Ryan Grinnell in the triple jump (fourth, 46-1.5).
Perkins was ninth in the 200 meters (25.56) and Grinnell finished fifth in the high jump (6-4) and 12th in the long jump (21-4.25).
Junior Matt Larson placed 37th in the 110-meter hurdles (20.24), while junior Robb Hollenbeck fouled in the long jump.
The entirety of the Griz track and field teams open their season next Saturday at Dornblaser Field in Missoula at the Al Manuel Meet.
