Whitworth Peace Meet
Friday, April 3 / Live Results / Meet Info
Â
The Montana track and field team opened up the outdoor season in impressive fashion at home last week. They now look to keep the momentum rolling for the first road meet of the season as they travel to Spokane for the Whitworth Peace Meet.
Â
Montana broke five program records and three stadium records at the Al Manuel Invitational last weekend and saw 20+ athletes enter the program's all-time top 10 lists.
Â
It was a big start for the program, but head coach Doug Fraley is hoping to see his team back up the fast start with more solid performances in week two.
Â
"We're excited about week two. It's the next step in the process for us," Fraley said. "We will sit a few kids out that have nicks but the majority of our team will be going over to, in some cases try to improve on what they did last week and in other cases solidify what they did last week."
Â
The Grizzlies will be resting several of week one's record breakers with Callie Wilson (100m & 4x100m), Erin Wilde (high jump), and Karsen Beitz (4x100m) all staying home, but there are plenty of other exciting event areas and athletes competing for Montana.
Â
The meet is scheduled to open with the women's discus at 10:55 a.m. (MT) with the first race on the tracks the women's 10K at 11:30 a.m. It's an all-day affair with the final running events being held close to 8:00 p.m. (MT).
Â
The meet will feature fellow Big Sky teams in Idaho and Eastern Washington along with Seattle U and Gonzaga from the D1 level. There will be plenty of great competition from the lower levels as well with full fields across the board.
Â
"It's a good, well-rounded meet and just about every event has a solid level of competition," Fraley said. "It's another good test to go compete against good competition and try to improve team-wide."
Â
It's the second of six meet weekends for the Grizzlies during the regular season and brings the team to an important checkpoint in the season. Montana will have a week off before they go down to California for several meets from April 16-18.
Â
This week is the last chance for athletes to make their case that they should be on the plane down to California.
Â
"For a lot of people, they are competing this week to try to earn a spot on the roster for California," Fraley said. "There's a lot of incentive for some people that might be on the bubble for that trip right now that can check that box with a good performance this week."
Â
The California trip will bring Montana to the midway point of the season and has been a breakout week for several Griz athletes in the past.
Â
"The first two meets are all inclusive, everyone who is healthy and competing at a decent level is competing," Fraley said. "Then it's a big trip out to California for good weather, great competition, and great facilities, so it's definitely a checkpoint if you make that roster to California it means you're in the top end of our roster and that's an important thing for us to identify after two competitions."
Â
It will be a difficult call to make after the success of the first week. Montana had over 20 athletes break into the top 10 in program history behind a strong overall team performance at home.
Â
The Grizzlies, picked to finish 3rd in both the men's and women's Coaches' Polls, are deep on both sides with great balance in the event areas but also several event groups that run five people or more deep.
Â
They had sprinting, jumping, and throwing school records all fall in the opening week, a great sign of the balance of the team.
Â
"I think the best part about last week was that the success was spread out in a lot of different disciplines," Fraley said. "That's the way we're trying to build our team is to have multiple areas for us that are very strong and that we can build on to do very well at the Big Sky Conference meet."
Â
There's a lot of talk of records, top 10s, and trips to California, but at the end of the day Fraley is just hoping that his team can keep up the positive momentum that they were able to build at home last week.
Â
"We want to take the momentum from what happened at home last week and take that on the road," Fraley said. "That's the biggest thing early in the season is just maintaining your trajectory. There are always improvements that can be made in our sport in every event, so whether it's improving your performance numbers or working on a certain component of your event, there's always progress to be made."
