Final football scrimmage slated for Friday afternoon

Fourth-year head coach Bobby Hauck and his University of Montana football team will put the finishing touches on their 2006 spring drills on Friday, April 14, when they have an abbreviated final scrimmage in Washington-Grizzly Stadium beginning at approximately 3:45 p.m.
??We are going to practice before the scrimmage, and this scrimmage will be rather limited in comparison to the first two big ones that we had earlier this spring, and we??ll go with far fewer plays this Friday,?? said Hauck, who has the 29-11 career record at his alma mater. ??But, we do want to have a good practice and get some work done, and then have a scrimmage in which we will run 30 or 40 plays.??
Hauck said that he was pleased with the progress of the offense this spring.
??The offense is coming on, and the offensive line is coming together, and I think we will go as far as they can take us,?? Hauck said. ??I do like the progress that we??ve made offensively, there??s been some great work done in that area. (Senior) Josh Swogger has distanced himself from the other quarterbacks and done a very nice job this spring, continues to be focused and tries to get better every day.??
Hauck added that he expected a lot from his veteran defense this season.
??Last year we probably had one of the best defenses in school history,?? Hauck said. ??We gave up fewer points than anyone in our conference last year, and we were ranked nationally in scoring defense (16th, allowing 18.17 points a game) and in turnover margin (sixth, at +1.08 a game).
??Certainly those kind of defensive results are what we are looking for in the coming year because we have a lot of kids back on the defensive side of the ball,?? Hauck said.
??I think that we have great depth there (on defense),?? Hauck continued. ??In our first team, we have some big-time players, and the guys pushing them are not too far behind.??
Hauck noted that several players have played well this spring, and he singled out a few of them for individual praise.
??The guy that sticks out this spring whose made largest strides is (junior) Eric Allen at wide receiver,?? Hauck said. ??He??s a whole different guy and different football player than he was here last January. I am very excited about his future.
??Also, (junior) Brent Russum falls into that category,?? Hauck said. ??He??s a different guy, and I am very enthused about the way he is playing on the offensive line.??
??As far as the newcomers are concerned, as I mentioned, Josh Swogger is doing a nice job and grasps more of the offense every day, which is crucial at the quarterback position,?? Hauck said. ??(Junior wide receiver) Craig Chambers is a gifted player who is working hard to find his niche on our team, and (junior halfback) Reggie Bradshaw has made real strides this spring as well. Reggie has become not just a speed guy, but a real power back between the tackles."
