Steenekamp named men's tennis player of the week

University of Montana senior Jan Steenekamp has been named Big Sky Conference Men??s Tennis Player of the Week the league office announced Thursday. Steenekamp went 3-0 in singles and doubles play in leading the Grizzlies to three consecutive victories last week.
Steenekamp, a senior from Burgersdorp, South Africa, is 12-2 in his last 14 matches at No. 1 singles. He has also won three straight doubles contests at the No. 3 position playing with fellow senior Varun Giri. Steenekamp is 19-6 in singles matches this season. He has been named Player of the Week twice.
In Montana??s 7-0 sweep of MSU-Billings, Steenekamp and Giri blanked Jarret Rummell and Josh Berns at the No. 3 doubles spot, 8-0. Steenekamp then made quick work of Tytus Stempniewicz atop the singles lineup with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Steenekamp and the Grizzlies came back the next day with a 5-2 Big Sky Conference win over Eastern Washington. The two-time all-conference selection came from behind to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 over Pannhara Mam at No. 1 singles. The win over Mam improved Steenekamp to 5-0 in Big Sky Conference play. Steenekamp also won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles over Art Karas and Kyle Cruzat, improving to 3-2 in league doubles action.
Montana closed out its three-match home weekend with a 4-3 win over Gonzaga. Steenekamp and Giri opened the contest with an 8-1 win over Cooper Fratt and Robert Penney at No. 3 doubles. Steenekamp topped GU??s Reid Arthur, 6-3, 6-1, for his eighth straight win at No. 1 singles.
Montana (8-10, 3-2 BSC) closes out its dual match regular season this Saturday with a 12 p.m. (MTN) home contest with first-place Montana State (13-10, 5-0 BSC).
