UM soccer hosts MSU-Billings in home opener

The University of Montana soccer team will host No. 18 MSU-Billings in its home opener Friday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m.
The Grizzlies enter the game 3-5-0 after dropping two games over the weekend to a pair of Pac-10 teams.
UM fell to Washington State, 2-1, Friday, Sept. 15, and followed up with a 2-1 loss to Arizona Sunday, Sept. 17.
MSU-Billings enters the game 9-0 after defeating Texas A&M International Saturday, Sept. 16. The Yellowjackets will face Rocky Mountain College, Wednesday, Sept. 19.

This will be the first meeting between Montana and MSU-Billings. This will be the second time that the Griz have faced a Division II school. UM defeated Hawaii Pacific, 2-0, Oct. 9, 1995.

"Billings is a high-scoring team that has demonstrated the ability to score, and it doesn't matter who it's against. They have a positive attitude, and if you make a mistake they will make you pay for it with goals.
"We will have to be at our best against them. They are coming in on a high. They want to get a win off a Division I school," said coach Neil Sedgwick on Friday??s opponent MSU-Billings.

Montana head coach Neil Sedgwick (Dalhouise, 1995) is in his third season at UM. The Sackville, Nova Scotia, native has a 14-26-3 record leading the Griz and a 33-41-3 career record in his fifth season as a head coach. Prior to joining the Griz staff, Sedgwick was an assistant at Southern California and was the head coach at North Dakota. Sedgwick has never faced MSU-Billings.
Montana State-Billings head coach Don Trentham (Columbia College, 1999) is in his fifth season leading the Yellowjackets. Trentham is 41-33-6 at MSU-Billings and as a head coach. He served as an assistant coach at Embry-Riddle University. This is his first meeting against the Yellowjackets.

Sophomore Sara Campbell picked up her first career goal for the Grizzlies when she scored UM??s lone against Washington State Friday, Sept. 15, in Pullman, Wash.
The Billings, Mont., native has taken seven shots this season in eight games. For her career she has 25 shots in 24 games.
shapka tallies first griz goal
Freshman Kristyn Shapka recorded her first career goal for the Grizzlies when she scored a goal against Arizona, Sunday, Sept. 17, to send the game to overtime.
The St. Albert, Alberta, native has five shots, two on goal, this season and appeared in all eight games for the Grizzlies.
lamberty notches second assist
Senior Kristina Lamberty notched her second assist of the season on Sara Campbell??s goal against Washington State, Friday, Sept. 15.
The Alamo, Calif., native leads the team with two assists and has also scored one goal this season. She also ranks second on the team with 22 shots, including 14 on goal.
griz in overtime
The Griz lost in overtime for the first time this season when they lost to Arizona, 2-1, Sunday, Sept. 17.
Before Sunday the last time Montana lost in overtime was against Portland State, Oct. 31, 2005. The last time the Grizzlies won in overtime was Sept. 11, 2005, when they defeated Utah State, 2-1.

The Grizzlies have not been afraid to shoot this season. UM has outshot its opponents 105-82 this season. A majority of its shots, 57, have come in the first half. Ironically, seven of the Grizzlies 12 goals this season have come in the second half.
Montana??s opponents have also taken 46 of their 82 shots during the first half this season. They have also scored five of their nine goals have been during the first half.

MSU-Billings enters the game with a perfect 9-0 record and ranked No. 18 in the most recent NSCAA Division II rankings. The Yellowjackets have a high-scoring offense, outscoring their opponents, 42-2. Their goals have come from their lopsided advantage in shots, 166-62.
Senior Ally Stroup leads the team with 13 goals and five assists for 31 points this season. The Ojai, Calif., native has five game-winning goals and two hat tricks this season.
Freshman Jelisa Guy has also tallied eight goals and six assists for 20 points this season. The Kalispell, Mont., native also has one hat trick and one game-winning goal.
Junior Brittney Sandau also has six goals and eight assists on the season. The Billings product has two game-winning goals on 28 shots.
The Yellowjackets have a diverse scoring attack as 12 of their 16 players have tallied a goal.
Senior Megan Plank has a 0.33 goals against average this season in goal. The Phoenix, Ariz., native has made 39 saves and allowed three goals.

Freshman Sara Campbell scored her first career goal for the lone Montana goal against Washington State. She was assisted by senior Kristina Lamberty.
Freshman Grace Harris made four saves and allowed two goals for the Grizzlies.
Amber Wittmers made one save and allowed one goal for the Cougars.
Freshman Kristyn Shapka also notched her first career goal with her goal in the 80th minute to send the game to overtime. She scored of a loose ball that was sent in off a corner kick.
Jacquelin Broussard recorded a pair of assists for the Cougars.
The Wildcats outshot the Grizzlies 26-10 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks during the game.
