The University of Montana soccer team battled Big Sky Conference foe Sacramento State to a scoreless tie on Friday evening at South Campus Stadium in Missoula. The Grizzlies, recording their first draw of the 2007 season, moved to 3-9-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference action. The Hornets moved to 7-3-4 on the year, 1-0-2 in league play.
Both goalkeepers played all 110 minutes of the match to record shutouts for their respective teams.
Sophomore Grace Harris registered three saves en route to her third shutout of 2007 and 10th career shutout. Harris moved into third overall in career shutouts, passing Natalie Hiller who tallied nine from 1996-2000. Sophomore Mandy Trojan had fives saves in a strong effort for Sacramento State.
Montana had a couple of goal scoring opportunities late in the match.
In the 51st minute the Grizzlies had pressed forward in the attacking third, sending four shots at the goalkeeper in a matter of seconds. In the sequence, freshman forward Kaitlyn Heinsohn recorded two shots, fellow freshman Frankie Brady and sophomore Abby Grafft also tallied a shot. Heinsohn??s second shot was on target, but a Hornet defender headed it off the back line to preserve the shutout.
Heinsohn generated another scoring opportunity in the first extra period, breaking behind the defense of Sacramento State. She played a ball into the 18-yard box for freshman forward Malia Hendrix, who fired a shot passed the Hornet goalkeeper. The goal was nullified due to Hendrix??s offside position.
The match played out fairly evenly statistically. The Hornets out-shot the Grizzlies, 13-10, while also maintaining an advantage in corner kicks (3-2). Sacramento State was whistled for 19 fouls, including 13 in the second half. Montana registered 13 fouls in the match.
Eight different Grizzlies recorded a shot in the match, with four players taking shots on goal. Hendrix and Heinsohn led the team with two shots apiece, with both of Hendrix??s shots coming on goal.
Six different Hornets took shots, with four different players taking two shots. Forward Katie McCoy, midfielder Rebeccah Phillips and defender Erin Tarantino each had a shot on goal.
