The defending Big Sky Conference women's golf champion University of Montana Grizzlies begin their spring season Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, participating in the 17-team Red Rock Invitational at the par 72, 6,089-yard Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona, Arizona. Participating teams, along with Montana, include host Northern Arizona, Cal State Northridge, UC Riverside, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Gonzaga, Michigan, Montana State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Portland, Portland State, Utah Valley, Washington State, Western Michigan and William & Mary.
FALL WRAP-UP: UM competed in four tourneys (team results listed to the right). UM's highest placers last fall were seniors Krista Swanson and Jill Walker. Swanson tied for third at the CSU Ptarmigan Classic while Walker tied for 18th; Swanson tied for third at the Inland Empire Invitational and Walker placed eighth; Walker finished seventh at the Boise State Classic and Swanson tied for eighth; and Walker tied for 13th at the Aztec Fall Classic, while Swanson tied for 19th. (Results, records, bios, etc. listed in the press guide on UM's web site).
QUOTING COACH STEELE: "We look at the spring as our second season, and the success we had last fall gives us some confidence going into our spring schedule. We don't look at this first spring tournament as a gage for the rest of the season. Where we ended up in the fall is where we want to be in about a month. I don't know too much about a lot of the teams in this first tournament, but what we do is look and see if there are other teams from our conference and how we stack up against those teams.
"I have a lot of confidence in this team and they have a lot of confidence in themselves. They had a great fall season, which gives them a little bit of a push, and that's what they need to repeat this year as conference champions, and I think that we have the ability to do it even with losing (to graduation) Jasi Achrya. Jill Walker (a redshirt last year) is back, and we are not really losing much. We should continue to be strong, with only one freshman in there, and Alyssa (Williamson) is a strong player. I like this team's potential."
LAST YEAR (2006): Montana won its first ever Big Sky title, shooting a three-day total of 959 (330-319-310) at the Palm Valley Golf Club (Par 72, 6,160 yards) in Goodyear, Arizona. Acharya was first (219), Swanson was second (222), Mary Hasselberg tied for 13th (235), and Anna Maria Jaramillo and Brittany Williamson tied for 25th.
