Grizzlies sweep duals to open outdoor season

The University of Montana outdoor track and field teams had 18 Big Sky Conference qualifiers, 13 individual champions and swept its four duals at Saturday's Al Manuel Meet at Dornblaser Field in Missoula. The meet was the Grizzlies' first of the 2007 outdoor season.
The UM men swept their duals with Montana State and Eastern Washington, out-scoring the Bobcats, 120-76, and the Eagles, 98-96.
The Montana women also swept MSU and EWU, posting a 110-81 victory over Montana State and a 105-86 win over Eastern Washington.
Montana State sophomore Ellie Rudy provided the day's highlight when she broke the Dornblaser Field all-time pole vault record with a height of 13-4.5, narrowly surpassing the previous stadium mark of 13-4 set by MSU's Shannon Jones in 2002.
Eastern Washington's Carolee Gutierrez set an Al Manuel Meet record in the women's javelin with a throw of 167-9. She broke EWU's Stephanie Ulmer's record from 2006 of 165-8 in the "new" javelin (used since 1999) and also UM's Zoey Renbarger's record of 167-1 in the "old" javelin (1998 and earlier).
Highlighting the Montana women's Big Sky qualifiers was junior Loni Perkins-Judisch who not only qualified in the 200 and 400 meters, but won both events as well. Perkins-Judisch had a winning time of 24.62 in the 200 meters and 55.41 in the 400 meters, winning the latter event by over three seconds.
Senior Halladay Quist and freshmen Kara DeWalt and Jessa Linford also qualified with first-place efforts. Quist won the triple jump with a distance of 37-8.5, DeWalt won the steeplechase with a time of 11:15.41 and Linford won the high jump with a height of 5-3.25.
Also qualifying were sophomore Kim Tritz in the steeplechase (second, 11:27.42), senior Shannon Johnson in the 5,000 meters (third, 18:07.90) and sophomore Abbey Effertz in the shot (fourth, 42-0).
Johnson, Tritz and DeWalt also qualified for the 10,000 meters with their steeplechase and 5,000-meter times.
Like Perkins-Judisch, sophomore Ryan Grinnell also won two events with Big Sky-qualifying performances. Grinnell, who won the high jump and triple jump at the 2007 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships, won and qualified in those events Saturday, going 6-8 in the high jump and 48-2 in the triple jump.
Senior Matt Larson, junior Dan Bingham and freshman Landon Bowery also won events with conference-qualifying marks. Larson won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.09, Bingham won the steeplechase in 9:26.11 and Bowery won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.78.
Also qualifying were junior Cody Henning in the 200 meters (second, 21.97), junior Eli Hermann in the steeplechase (second, 9:38.58 - altitude adjusted to 9:31.97), junior Curtis Bean in the hammer (second, 184-9), junior Evan Wilson in the shot (sixth, 50-1.25) and freshman Wade Boss in the javelin (fifth, 194-9).
Bingham and Hermann also qualified for the 10,000 meters with their steeplechase times.
Picking up non-qualifying titles Saturday were senior Ryan Flaherty in the 800 meters (1:55.79), junior Nicole Walker in the 800 meters (2:18.69) and junior Bailey Cox in the long jump (17-10.25).
The UM women's 1,600-meter relay team was also victorious in a time of 3:54.05.
