Griz golfers at Big Sky Championships

The defending Big Sky Conference women??s golf champion University of Montana Grizzlies will attempt to defend their title, as they compete in the nine-team Big Sky Conference Golf Championship at the par 72, 6,165-yard Palm Valley Golf Club (Palms Course), April 16-17-18 in Goodyear, Arizona.
THE FIELD: Participating teams, along with Montana, are Big Sky schools Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Sacramento State, and Weber State. (Northern Colorado is ineligible to compete because of NCAA reclassification requirements).
GRIZ LAST WEEK: Montana placed sixth in the nine-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, shooting a 973. UM??s seniors Jill Walker and Krista Swanson finished in a three-way tie for 16th with a 240. Other UM finishers were: junior Brittany Williamson, 27th at 247, freshman Alyssa Williamson tied for 29th with a 249, while junior Anna Maria Jaramillo tied for 37th with a 253. NAU easily won the tourney with a 908.
QUOTING UM HEAD COACH JOANNE STEELE: ??We??ve been struggling this spring, but our players have kept their confidence up, and they??re trying to improve each week. The biggest thing right now is their confidence and the mental side of it. They??re swinging well, but we haven??t turned in a lot of low scores this spring.
??But, going into the conference championship, we know there??s a lot on the line. Like I said to the girls, ??the season can be over Wednesday night or it can go on for another month if we can win.?? They don??t want the season to be over yet, especially my two seniors (Walker and Swanson). They??ve both picked up their game the last week or so, understanding that??s it??s almost over for them, and are doing what they can to get this team going and add a spark to it and bring back that same feeling from last year.
??We are going back to a course that we are familiar with that we??ve played numerous times. That should be a benefit to us. NAU is really strong right now. They are definitely the team to beat. Eastern Washington is another strong team as is Sac State, and they all have their eye on it (the Big Sky title). It??s three days of golf, and hopefully they (NAU) will be pushed, and we are one of the teams to push them.??
