Griz pick up key Big Sky win over Lumberjacks

The University of Montana men's tennis team defeated Northern Arizona Saturday afternoon in a Big Sky Conference match at the Lindsay Tennis Center, 5-2. With the win the Grizzlies improved to 3-1 in league play, 8-8 overall, remaining in the hunt for the conference's No. 2 seed and first-round bye at the 2007 Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Championships.
Sacramento State, the pre-determined tournament host, wrapped up the No. 1 seed with a perfect 7-0 league schedule. Eastern Washington has also concluded Big Sky play, finishing 5-2. The Grizzlies defeated the Eagles in their head-to-head matchup in Cheney, Wash., 4-3, on March 10.
Northern Arizona dropped to 6-13 overall, 3-3 in Big Sky play with the loss.
Montana opened the match by earning a hard-fought doubles point. The two teams split the first two doubles matches, with the Griz picking up an 8-6 win at No. 2, with the Lumberjacks winning by the same score at No. 1.
The doubles point was decided when UM senior Brady Tommerup and freshman Mikolaj Borkowski won at No. 3, 9-8, picking up the win with a 9-7 victory in the tiebreaker.
Tommerup and Borkowski improved to 12-2 this spring at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Stuart Wing put Montana up 2-0 when he won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, but NAU rebounded with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 to even the score at 2-2.
Sophomore Felipe Raw gave the Griz the lead for good with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at No. 3, and Tommerup wrapped up the match, going to a third-set tiebreaker to win 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) at No. 6.
Freshman Raydner Ramos closed out the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 4.
