Griz golfers tied for fifth after day one

The defending Big Sky Conference women??s golf champion University of Montana Grizzlies find themselves in a monumental, if not impossible battle to repeat their title, as they are tied for fifth after the 18-hole, first-day of competition.
Montana shot a 320 today, tying it with Portland State for fifth, and finds itself 26 strokes behind the leading Sacramento State Hornet.
The Hornets fired a 294 which is +6 over par, to take a commanding lead after day one in the 54-hole tournament held on the 6,165-yard Palm Valley Golf Club. Tournament favorite Northern Arizona is 17 strokes back at +23 and carded a 311.
Weber State is in third place at 312, Eastern Washington follows in fourth at 318, and next are the Grizzlies and PSU, with Montana State in seventh (328) and Idaho State in eighth (329).
The Griz were led by senior Jill Walker who is tied for 11th with a 78 (37-41), while fellow senior Krista Swanson shot an 80 (41-39) and is tied for 18th. Both Walker and Swanson were named first team All-Big Sky earlier today.
Rounding out the scoring for Montana are juniors Brittany Williamson (39-42) and Anna Maria Jaramillo (41-40) who are tied for 20th,while freshman Alyssa Williamson is tied for 38th at 92 (48-44).
The tournament leader is Sacramento State senior Margaux Sheehan with a one-under-par 71 (35-36), while Hornet teammate Heather McMaster, a junior, and Northern Arizona freshman Bethany Leclair are tied for second, both shooting even par at 72.
Rounding out the top five individuals are Montana State junior Kelly Gillum and Sacramento State junior Kim Coppin who are tied for fourth at plus-one, each carding a 73.
Play resumes Tuesday at the Palms Course with 18 more holes and concludes Wednesday, once again with 18 holes.
