Griz golfers move up to 3rd in Big Sky Championships

The defending Big Sky Conference women??s golf champion University of Montana Grizzlies shot the second lowest round of the day and have moved up to third place in the 2007 league championships at the Palm Valley Golf Club, but they still find themselves in a huge task to repeat their title.
Montana shot a 298 today, 22 strokes better than its first-day total of 320. Yet the Grizzlies are still a whopping 34 strokes behind the red-hot Sacramento State Hornets, who shot a school-record 290 Tuesday to maintain a substantial lead.
The Hornets had no player shoot over 75 today en route to their school record 290, and coupled with Monday??s score of 294 they stand at 584. Tourney favorite Northern Arizona fired a 300 today and is 27 strokes back with a two-day total of 611.
Weber State is in fourth place at 620, while Portland State and Eastern Washington are tied for fifth with a score of 623, followed by Montana State in seventh (642) and Idaho State in eighth (658).
Leading the way for the Griz is senior Jill Walker who carded a par 72 today and has a two-day total of 150, which moved her into a three-way tie for fifth with freshman Bethany Leclair (72-78) of NAU and sophomore Aubree Nickle (74-76) of WSU.
Montana??s next highest placer is senior Krista Swanson who shot 74 today and an 80 yesterday, giving her a total of 154 which ties her with Sac State senior Jennifer Parkes for 15th. Walker and Swanson were named first team all-conference on Monday.
Rounding out the scoring for Montana are junior Anna Maria Jaramillo, who is 24th at 160 (81-79); junior Brittany Williamson is tied for 30th with a 164 (81-83), while freshman Alyssa Williamson carded an impressive score of 73 today after shooting a 92 yesterday, and is 32nd with a total of 165.
The leader remains Sacramento State senior Margaux Sheehan who shot three-under today to register a blistering score of 69, and coupled with her one-under-par 71 on Monday she has a four-stroke lead with a total score of 140.
Hornet teammates Heather McMaster and Kim Coppin, both juniors, are second and third with totals of 144 and 147, respectively, while Montana State junior Kelly Gillum is in fourth with a 149 (73-76).
The tournament concludes Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. with the final 18 holes.
