Second-half goals lead Griz past Detroit

Juniors Sara Aspinwall and Meghan Chambers scored second-half goals to lead The University of Montana soccer team to a 2-1 win over Detroit Friday evening at South Campus Stadium in Missoula. The victory improved the Grizzlies to 2-5 overall on the season, while dropping the Titans to 1-6.
Aspinwall, a defender from Great Falls, Mont., recorded her first collegiate goal in the 71st minute, a game-winner which beat Detroit goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry. Senior midfielder Mahlleace Tomsin took the corner kick, played it to the center of the six-yard line where Aspinwall was set for the redirect header.
Chambers, a midfielder from Lake Oswego, Ore., scored Montana first goal of the match, an equalizer which came in the 62nd minute. The goal-scoring sequence began when freshman forward Malia Hendrix, who came off the bench to provide an offensive spark for UM, sent a cross right-to-left through the 18-yard box. The ball found Chambers, who redirected the pass into the back of the net.
Detroit scored the match??s first goal in the 22nd minute, when Montana sophomore goalkeeper Grace Harris couldn??t maintain possession of a ball in the 18-yard box. Detroit midfielder Emily Kiely took advantage of the misplay and found the empty net for the 1-0 advantage.
Montana had the advantage in several statistical categories. The Grizzlies out-shot the Titans, 15-4, while registering seven corners to Detroits?? two. Five of the Grizzlies?? shots were on goal. Detroit had two shots on goal. DU was whistled for 10 fouls, Montana had seven fouls.
Junior midfielder Sara Campbell and sophomore forward Britta Bourne each recorded a team-high three shots. Aspinwall, Chambers and senior forward Carrie Lee added two shots apiece. Harris had one save, one goal allowed, while play all of the available 90 minutes.
Four different Titans had one shot in the match. Kiely and midfielder Trina Kochanski each had a shot on goal. Fortenberry had three saves, two goals allowed, while playing the duration of the match.
The Montana Nike Cup continues on Sunday when Montana (2-5) faces a non-conference match against Boise State (3-3-1), with match time scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (MTN). Oregon State and Detroit will face off in earlier action scheduled for noon.
