UM men picked second, women fourth in preseason polls

Sacramento State has been selected to win the 2008 Big Sky Conference men??s and women??s tennis titles for the second-straight year in a vote by the league coaches.
The Hornet women were a unanimous selection to win a seventh-consecutive crown with 64 total points. The men received seven first-place votes and 63 points in this year??s poll. They have won the conference championship six times, earning the title in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007.
Under the leadership of Dima Hrynashka, Sacramento State went 17-6 overall and 7-0 in conference play last year. The Hornets capped off the season by winning the 2007 Big Sky Championship and playing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Northern Arizona was picked second with one first-place vote and 55 total points. The Lumberjacks were followed by Montana State with 47 points and Montana claimed the fourth spot with 46 votes. The women??s coaches picked Northern Colorado fifth with 35 points, followed by Eastern Washington with 33. Weber State ranked seventh with 24 points. Portland State tennis returns this year after a five-year hiatus and the Vikings were chosen to finish in eighth place with 15 votes. Idaho State rounded out the women??s poll with nine points.
Last year the Sacramento State men??s team finished the season with a 20-5 overall and 7-0 league mark. Led by Slava Konikov, the Hornets won the tournament title and earned a berth to the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
The men??s coaches picked Montana State and Montana to finish in second place with 48 points apiece. The Bobcats also received one first-place vote. Northern Arizona was picked fourth with 42 points and one first-place vote. Eastern Washington finished fifth with 39 total points. The Eagles were followed by Weber State and Idaho State with 37 and 22 points respectively. Northern Colorado received 16 votes for eighth-place and Portland State, which returns to competition this year, was picked to finish last with nine points.
The 2007-08 championship will be held April 25-27 in Sacramento, Calif.
