Montana defeats North Dakota, 4-1

The University of Montana soccer team picked up its second win of the season as the Grizzlies decidedly defeated the University of North Dakota, 4-1, on Friday at South Campus Stadium.

Montana exploded in the first half, scoring three goals, two within one minute of each other in the 39th and 40th minute of play. Another goal was made by UM in the second half, followed by one lone UND goal in the last five minutes of the match.

Tonight marked first collegiate goals for all three scoring Grizzlies which included junior Sarah Stevens and freshmen Jaymie Brown and Brandee Marone.

The Grizzlies improved to 2-7-1 on the season while the Fighting Sioux dropped to 3-8-0.

Stevens put Montana on the scoreboard in the 24th minute when she scored unassisted, low, inside the left post from the top of the 18-yard box to beat UND keeper Lauren Sera.

Brown netted the second goal of the game in the 39th minute. She gained control of the ball off a purposeful pass from teammate Sara Campbell to push forward, leaving a trail of defenders behind. Her first shot was blocked by Sera but rebounded, leaving the net open for Brown???s second shot on goal which came low and to the left of a fallen Sera.

Less than a minute later Marone took her turn in front of the goal on an assist from Griz keeper Grace Harris who moved the ball down field after a long punt. Marone shot past Fighting Sioux defense to score on Sera.

It was Harris???s second assist on the season.

Montana returned to the field determined in the second half as well. In the 52nd minute, Marone received a short pass in front of the goal to score her second career goal. Campbell made the assist for her second in the match.

With less than five minutes remaining on the clock, UND???s Lauren Herrman attained the ball down field to shoot on Harris and score high, over her head for North Dakota???s lone goal of the game. Herrman made the play unassisted.

Montana out-shot North Dakota, 23-10. UND had a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Both Harris and Sera played the full 90 minutes in goal. Harris had three saves to Sera???s seven.

Montana returns to action on Sunday for the finale of its pre-conference season as the Grizzlies face Idaho at South Campus Stadium with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
