After trailing 7-2 in the first quarter, the fifth ranked Montana Grizzlies finished strong and earned their sixth conference win, 29-10, against the winless Idaho State Bengals by mainly sticking to the ground game.
Montana running back Chase Reynolds ran 18 times for 153 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Cole Bergquist completed 10 of his 21 passes with one touchdown and one interception. Grizzly defensive back Shann Schillinger put a stop to any rally by the Bengals by intercepting two passes in the fourth quarter.
Idaho State quarterback Kyle Blum was 16-for-34 for 246 yards and one touchdown. His favorite target was Eddie Thompson who caught eight balls for 120 yards and their only touchdown.
The first score came at 3:30 minutes into the game when senior defensive lineman Craig Mettler tackled Knickrehm in Idaho State???s end zone. The tackle for loss resulted in a safety giving the Griz the early lead at 2-0.
With 4:16 left in the first quarter, Bergquist overthrew Marc Mariani and was intercepted by D.J. Clark at Montana???s 7-yard line. On the Bengals??? possession, Blum completed three long passes ??? a 27-yarder to Thompson, a 20-yarder to J.D. Ponciano, and a 19-yarder to Kenyon Blue for 19 yards ??? to get the Bengals into scoring position at the Montana 31-yard line. Idaho State, on fourth down, got a delay of game penalty that pushed them back 5 yards. Kicker Jerett Huk came up just short on the 53-yard field goal attempt.
Reynolds was stripped on Montana???s ensuing possession by Michael Wright and Jon Tuua recovered for the Bengals. Blum took a deep shot downfield and found an open Thompson for the first touchdown of the game with 13:48 remaining in the second quarter. The 42-yard touchdown pass ??? Idaho State???s longest touchdown throw of the season ??? gave the Bengals a 7-2 lead.
With 9:38 remaining in the first half, the Bengals??? offense possessed the ball with a lead for the first time this season when they started their drive on the Montana 1-yard line. Their drive ended just in Montana territory on the 48-yard line.
Mariani returned the following punt 94 yards for a touchdown tying the longest punt return in school history. The punt return, Mariani???s first of his career, tied Montana???s longest punt return in school history and regained Montana???s lead at 9-7.
Blum was intercepted by Alex Shaw, the first of his career, on Idaho State???s next possession and returned 11 yards to the Bengals 34-yard line.
It took Montana two plays after the turnover to extend their lead. The first was a trick play: Bergquist threw a backward pass to Ferriter who then threw it back to Bergquist for a 20-yard completion. The second play resulted in a touchdown when Bergquist took the quarterback draw 7 yards into the end zone with 2:33 remaining in the second quarter. The PAT was blocked giving the Grizzlies a 15-7 lead. Bergquist improbably led the Griz in receiving yards in the first half on the strength of his reception.
With 1:57 left in the first half, Montana had great field position at the Bengal 31-yard line. Nine plays later, Bergquist connected with a diving junior receiver Tyler Palmer for an 8-yard touchdown catch. The Grizzlies ended the first half leading 22-7.
A would-be interception by junior safety Shann Schillinger was nullified when sophomore linebacker Brandon Fisher got called for a roughing the passer penalty. The penalty gave the Bengals a first and ten from Montana???s 17-yard line. Idaho State could not get the first down, so they kicked a 27-yard field goal with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter to put the score at 10-22.
Montana then went to the ground giving the ball to Reynolds six times for 63 yards, but were unable to put any points on the board when kicker Brody McKnight missed from 32 yards out. The Bengals were unable to move the ball after a three-and-out and gave it back with 13:06 remaining in the game.
The Grizzlies kept putting the ball in the hands of Reynolds. Reynolds carried the ball each of the seven plays for 57 yards and earned a 1-yard leaping touchdown to extend Montana???s lead to 29-10 with 9:45 remaining in the game.
Idaho State reached the red zone on their next possession, but Blum was intercepted by Schillinger in the end zone. The Bengals got the ball back on Montana???s 40-yard line after forcing a three-and-out. Schillinger ended the final Bengal drive by intercepting Blum for the second time at the goal line. He returned it 21 yards giving his offense the ball with 2:58 remaining in the game. Montana kept the ball on the ground to run out the clock.
The Grizzlies (10-1 overall, 6-1 Big Sky) take on the rival Montana State Bobcats at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.?? Kickoff is slated for 12:05 pm.
