Preseason golf poll released for 2008

Following a strong fall campaign, Eastern Washington has been selected by the Big Sky Conference women??s golf coaches to capture the 2008 Big Sky women??s Conference Championship.
Marc Hughes?? Eagles received eight first-place votes and 64 total points in the preseason poll, which was released on Thursday. The nine Big Sky coaches voted in the poll, and could not vote for their own team.
Eastern Washington finished fourth at the 2007 Big Sky Championship.
The Eagles competed in five tournaments in the fall, winning the MDA Invitational in Spokane. EWU is currently ranked 58th in the nation in the Golf Stat rankings. The Eagles averaged 305.36 strokes per round during the fall. EWU is led by junior Chloe Nelson, freshman Kristina Gargaro and seniors Marli Mikulecky and Chelsey Lollar.
Eastern Washington has never won the Big Sky Championship. The Eagles finished second in 2003 and 2004.
Northern Arizona was picked second with one first-place vote and 54 total points. Tom McCurdy left as Northern Arizona??s golf coach after the fall to take over at Wichita State. The Lumberjacks have not yet named a replacement.
Northern Colorado was picked third. The Bears, who joined the Big Sky in 2006-07, will be eligible for the league championship for the first time. UNC??s fall season was highlighted by the team championship at the Kenneth Smith Golf Classic hosted by University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Defending champion Sacramento State was selected fourth, followed by Portland State, Weber State, Montana, Montana State and Idaho State.
This year??s Big Sky Conference Championship will be held April 21-23 at the Foothills Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz. The league championship was held at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz., from 2003-2007.
The league will also welcome several new coaches to this spring??s championship. Former LPGA golfer Leslie Spalding is the new coach at Montana State. Kathleen Takaishi, a former All-American at Oregon State, has taken over at Portland State. David Sutherland, a graduate of Fresno State, is the new golf director at Sacramento State.
Montana State opens spring play on Feb. 11 at the UC Riverside tournament in Beaumont, Calif.
