The University of Montana men's tennis team (3-1, 1-0 BSC) will continue their dual match schedule this week with contests against Sacramento State, Idaho and Montana State. The Grizzlies will host the Hornets on Friday at 2 p.m. (MTN), face a neutral-site match against the Vandals on Saturday at 3 p.m., before closing the weekend with a road match against the Bobcats on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Griz-Hornets contest is scheduled to be played indoors at the former Missoula Athletic Club's tennis bubble. The match against Idaho and Montana State will be played at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman.
Newcomers contribute immediately: Juniors Alexandre Gorj and Greg Friedman have made an impact since joining the team as mid-year transfers.
Gorj, from Strasbourg, France, is 3-1 in singles action while playing the No. 5 position. Gorj is 1-2 in doubles play, teaming up with junior Colin Dektar at the No. 1 slot.
Friedman, from Johannesburg, South Africa, saw his first action last week in Colorado when he and Dektar won 8-2 in their match at No. 1 doubles against Dayton.
Singles lineup tough to open year: All six players in the Grizzlies' singles lineup maintain a record of .500 or better in their last 10 matches. Dektar, who plays atop the lineup, is 5-5 in his last 10 contests (2-2 this dual match season). Junior Felipe Raw is 3-1 at the No. 2 slot this spring, 6-4 in his last 10. Sophomore Mikolaj Borkowski is 4-0 in dual match play at the No. 3 position and 8-2 overall his last 10 singles contests.
Sophomore Raydner Ramos and Gorj are 3-1 in duals this spring at the No. 4 and 5 positions respectively. Ramos, who is 27-17 in career singles matches, has won six of his last 10 matches dating back to the fall. Freshman David Cysneiros is undefeated (4-0) in duals this spring at the No. 6 position. Cysneiros, like Ramos, has won six of his last 10.
Up next: Montana will play one match next week, a home contest against MSU-Billings scheduled for March 28 at 10 a.m.
Griz seek first league crown: Montana is 1-0 in Big Sky Conference play this season, courtesy of their 7-0 road sweep of Portland State on February 23. The Griz have finished second on three occasions, in the 1967, 1971 and 2006 seasons.
Men picked to finish second in BSC preseason poll: UM was selected to finish second, along with Montana State, in the 2008 Big Sky Conference preseason poll. Sacramento State was picked by the league's coaches to finish atop the BSC standings for the second straight year.
Northern Arizona was picked fourth with 42 points and one first-place vote. Eastern Washington finished fifth with 39 total points. The Eagles were followed by Weber State and Idaho State with 37 and 22 points respectively. Northern Colorado received 16 votes for eighth-place and Portland State, which returns to competition this year, was picked to finish last with nine points.
