Griz golf team set for conference championships

The University of Montana golf team will compete at the 2008 Big Sky Conference Golf Championships April 21-23 in Phoenix, Ariz. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the 6,131-yard Foothills Golf Club, the first year the course has hosted the league championship.
The team champion will represent the Big Sky Conference at an NCAA Regional in May 8-10. The West Regional site is in Sacramento, Calif.

Quick course facts: Foothills Golf Club is a par 72, 6,131-yard golf course with a course rating of 70.2 and a slope of 122. The links-style course features more than 65 bunkers, rolling fairways, rocky desert terrain and Bermuda grass surface. The course, which opened in 1987, was designed by former PGA standout Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish.
Montana??s 2008 lineup: Grizzlies participating this week include senior Anna Maria Jaramillo, sophomores Jacqueline Olson, Teddi Roberts and Alyssa Williamson and freshman Carrisa Simmons.
Roberts if first off the tee at 8:08 a.m. Jaramillo follows her with an 8:15 a.m. tee time. Simmons (8:22 a.m.) and Williamson (8:30 a.m.) are next off the tee, while Olson is the final Grizzly to tee-off at 8:38 a.m.
Last year at the BSC Championship: Sacramento State won the tournament with a three-round total of 884, the first league crown in the history of the Hornet golf program. Montana finished fifth with a 54-hole total of 937.
Jaramillo and Williamson are the only two players on this year??s squad to participate in the league championship last season. Jaramillo finished tied for 29th (81-79-85=245) while Williamson took 36th place (92-73-88=253).
Griz in the tournament: Montana, the 2006 Big Sky Conference champions, is one of seven schools to have won the conference crown. Northern Arizona (five) and Portland State (three) are the only schools to have won the Big Sky tourney more than once. Eastern Washington and Northern Colorado are the only two league schools without a title.
Two Montana players have finished as the individual medalist at the Big Sky Championships. In 2006, the Grizzlies were led by Jasi Acharya??s three-round 219 (73-75-71) en route to UM??s first-ever league championship. Montana??s Katie Jacobson fired a three-round 230 in the 2002 season to also earn individual medalist honors.
Last time out: Montana finished second at the Big Sky Conference Preview tournament on April 10. Williamson carded a 4-over-par 76 and Olson fired a 5-over-par 77 to lead the Grizzlies at the 18-hole warm-up tournament which was played at the Foothills Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
