Montana soccer heads to Denver for opening road trip

The University of Montana soccer team heads south to face the University of Denver Pioneers this Friday at 2 p.m. at Pioneer Field in its first road match of the 2008 season. The Grizzlies finish out their weekend on the road with a match against Wyoming at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie on Sunday at noon.
After falling to Washington 3-0 last Thursday, the Grizzlies are 0-3 on the season.
Despite the losses, Montana coach Neil Sedgwick holds a positive attitude heading out on the road. "We have had some very good training sessions in the past week. The players know that every game isn???t indicated in the score but in how they are playing. The team dynamic is continuing to grow stronger every day."
Denver opens strong in 2008 season
The Pioneers, who were picked to win the Sun Belt Conference this year in the preseason coaches poll, have had a good start to their 2008 soccer season going 2-0 in their first two matches. They hosted their season opener against New Mexico, defeating the Lobos 3-1. The Pioneers then traveled on to Boulder to defeat Colorado 1-0 in a matchup of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last November.
This past weekend Denver traveled to Honolulu for the Ohana Hotel Shootout tournament held at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium to face both Long Beach State and Hawaii. With a scoreless tie after two overtime periods against Long Beach State on Saturday, the Pioneers out-scored Hawaii 2-1. Although Hawaii scored the first goal of the match, the defending Sun Belt Champions came back strong in the second half.
Denver will host Montana on Friday with a 2008 season record of 3-0-1.
"They are a solid team with a good pool of players from the Denver area," stated Coach Sedgwick. "We have seen them before and we know that they are experienced and well-organized."
Denver coach Jeff Hooker is in his seventeenth season at Denver after leading the Pioneers to a 13-5-4 record in 2007 and knocking off the nation's top team by defeating Stanford at a neutral site in Boulder, Colo. The Pioneers captured their fifth SBC Tournament title last year. Coach Hooker has a career record of 201-85-30 at DU.
New coaching makes Wyoming an unknown
The University of Wyoming is currently 2-2. The Cowgirls host James Madison this Friday in Laramie before facing Montana on Sunday.
The Cowgirl soccer team finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 9-10, 4-3 in conference play, placing fourth in the Mountain West Conference, its best finish in program history.
Wyoming coach Danny Sanchez is in his first season coaching the Cowgirls. He has a career record of 128-11-7 in six seasons as the head women???s coach at Metro State College in Denver, Colo.
"We don't know what to expect this year with the new coaching staff. It is always tough to go to Wyoming, both because of the strong players and because of the conditions," said Coach Sedwick.
Senior Tamika Wilson (F) returns after being named the MWC Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2007. Senior Amanda Lathrop (M) was a MWC Second Team selection for the second time in her career.
Washington defeats Montana 3-0
Montana hosted Washington in its third match of the season last Thursday at South Campus Stadium. The Huskies shut out the Grizzlies, 3-0, scoring two goals in the first half of the match, the third in the 72nd minute.
Husky Kendyl Pele scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute inside the left post from the top of the 18-yard box. Kate Deines scored the second goal of the evening with a rebound off the crossbar in the 32nd minute. Alex Kirk made the assist for both plays.
Grizzly players Sara Aspinwall and Kaitlyn Heinsohn each took two of the shots taken by Montana.
Husky Veronica Perez made the third goal for Washington off a penalty kick, beating Montana keeper Grace Harris low and to the right. Perez tied with Deines for game-high in shots with four each.
Washington finished with a 14-4 shot advantage over Montana and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior keeper Grace Harris played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save.
