The University of Montana soccer team defeated the University of Wyoming at the Louis S. Madrid Stadium in Laramie on Sunday. After the Cowgirls had a 1-0 lead heading in to half time, Montana scored early in the second to tie the game. The game-winning goal was scored seven minutes into overtime play for the Grizzlies' first win of 2008.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Heinsohn made both goals, claiming all three of Montana's goals for the season thus far.
This victory brings Montana's season record to 1-4. The Cowgirls fall to 2-4 for their season.
The first goal of the match was made in the 27th minute of play by Cowgirl Corey Thieman. Off one of Wyoming's three corner kicks in the first half, Emily Layton lofted the ball across the net where Thieman headed the ball past Grizzly keeper Grace Harris.
The Cowgirls had a 13-2 shot advantage over the Grizzlies in the first half. Harris made seven saves in this half alone, Wyoming making one.
"We struggled with the altitude at the beginning and it is evident from our play during first half," stated head coach Neil Sedgwick, ???but we came out in the second half with much more energy and purpose.???
Indeed the Grizzlies came back with more conviction as Kaitlyn Heinsohn scored just two minutes into the second half. Anna Pingree made the assist as she passed to Heinsohn who was already in the box. Heinsohn played through two defending Cowgirls to net the ball past keeper Jamie Scarcliff at close range.
Wyoming nearly out shot Montana in the second half, 8-7. The Cowgirls had an overall corner kick advantage of 7-2.
The game ended a scoreless tie and went in to a ten minute overtime period. Seven minutes in to overtime Kaitlyn Heinsohn attained the ball from Meghan Chambers and shot from the right side of the box to score the game-winner past Wyoming keeper Ryann Torrero. With both teams on the defense, Montana was able to outshoot Wyoming 3-2 and each team took one corner kick.
Harris played all 100 minutes in goal making eight saves. Scarcliff played 58 minutes in goal for the Cowgirls, making one save and allowing one goal before becoming injured. Torrero finished the game, making two saves and allowing one goal.
