Montana travels to face Gonzaga

The Gonzaga University soccer team will host the University of Montana this Friday at the Gonzaga Soccer Field with kickoff at 4:00 pm (MTN).
Montana hits the road again this Friday for a lone match of the weekend after returning from travel to take on Denver and Wyoming. The 23rd ranked Pioneers shut out Montana, 2-0 last Friday evening but the Grizzlies ended the weekend strong with a win over the Cowgirls in overtime, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.
After posting one win and one loss last weekend, Montana's season record is currently 1-4.
The players hold a positive attitude heading to Spokane after a victory at Wyoming. "We were on the road, at altitude, and had to play in overtime. There seemed to be a lot of things going against us but we were able to overcome all of them," stated head coach Neil Sedgwick.
Gonzaga to host Montana Friday
Gonzaga currently holds a season record of 3-2 after defeating California State University, Bakersfield at home last Sunday, 1-0.
The Bulldogs ended their 2007 season with a record of 12-7-1, 3-4 in West Coast Conference play, placing fifth overall. The 12 victories from last year tied a program high for the Bulldogs from 2005.
"They are a good team and we know each other well," said Coach Sedwick. "We have the opportunity of seeing Gonzaga every fall and spring and it is usually a single goal that determines the outcome."
Gonzaga lost five letterwinners and five starters from its team, including four seniors who earned All-West Coast Conference accolades in 2007. Current senior Kelcey Goddard (MF) led the way last year with second-team honors and sophomore goal keeper Lauren Ames was named to the WCC All-Freshman team.
Forward Shara Rhodes joins the Zags this year as a key newcomer having taken eight shots on the season including a game-high four in Sunday's game against the Roadrunners.
Head coach Shannon Stiles is entering her tenth season at Gonzaga. Her career and school record is 72-93-8.
No. 23 Denver defeats Montana
The University of Denver (4-0-1) soccer team defeated Montana last Friday at Pioneer Stadium, 2-0, in Montana's first road match of the season. It was a scoreless match up to the 68th minute of play when the Pioneers pushed forward making two goals back-to-back to shut out the Grizzlies.
With only 21:11 left to play, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead. Junior Kelli Breidenbach made the first goal on an assist from junior midfielder Emily Stewart. Stewart passed to Breidenbach at the top of the box to score low right of Grizzly keeper Grace Harris.
Just three minutes later the Pioneers posted another as Breidenbach made nearly the same play. After an assist from senior Taryn Hemmings, Breidenbach???s shot ricocheted off the right goalpost past Harris to net the second goal.
Grizzly senior Sara Aspinwall took two shots, one on goal, against Pioneer keeper Mackenzie Snyder. Sophomore Kaitlyn Heinsohn took two shots as well and on goal for Snyder's second save of the game.
Denver posted a 13-5 shot advantage and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Harris played all 90 minutes in goal for Montana, making five saves and allowing two goals.
Montana downs Wyoming for first win of 2008 season
The University of Montana defeated the University of Wyoming (2-4), 2-1, Sunday afternoon for its first win of the 2008 season. The Cowgirls hosted the Grizzlies in Larmaie at the Louis S. Madrid Stadium for Montana???s second road match. After Wyoming took the lead in the first half, 1-0, Montana returned in the second with purpose and determination, scoring two minutes into the half to tie the game. Montana scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into overtime play.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Heinsohn made both goals for the Grizzlies on Sunday, claiming possession to all of Montana???s goals for the season thus far.
The first goal of the match was scored in the 27th minute as Cowgirl Corey Thieman scored a header off of Emily Layton's lofting corner kick against Montana keeper Grace Harris.
Kaitlyn Heinsohn received an assist from Anna Pingree to score just two minutes into the second half. Heinsohn collected the ball inside the box, making her way past two defending Cowgirls to score on keeper Jamie Scarcliff at close range.
With a 1-1 tie the game went in to sudden death overtime play. Heinsohn shot the game-winning goal seven minutes in as she attained the ball from Meghan Chambers, shooting from the right side of the box past Wyoming keeper Ryann Torrero. Montana out-shot Wyoming in overtime, 3-2.
Harris played the entirety of the game making eight saves and allowing just one goal.
